Subject: Is P5 Collision Detection Worth Using?

rreynolds ( ) posted Fri, 22 October 2004 at 11:13 AM · edited Fri, 26 July 2024 at 6:07 AM

Would collision detection work well to wrap an easypose tentacle around a figure's body? I went through posts going back a year and couldn't find much info on P5's collision detection feature. There haven't been many recent discussions on collision detection either. I'm not sure if this is because the feature hasn't been used much or if the efforts to use it haven't panned out. One post said that collision only works with the Translation Tool and not if dials are used to move models. Is it worth playing around with collision detection when posing figures together?

THe detection is in two forms, and is actually only applicable to hair and cloth. Otherwise, um, no.

Yes it works, I've just tried Oola's leash against her arm.

Would it work to stop my flamethrower model's harness straps and fuel hose from interpenetrating its user's body?

This is a very good question, and would be useful if it worked, say, when trying to place something directly on the floor, (in conjunction with drop to floor), and stacking items, say standing something on a pedestal.

I'm afraid I can't get it to work myself. I find P5 freezes up after a short time of playing with collision detection. Phil, Ynsaen, are you two actually using the EasyPose dials and finding the collision stops the EP figure from going through the arm?

I understand, that you have to turn collision detection on for every object involved. When each body part of a figure is an object, do I have to turn it on for each body part where necessary? Or do I have to turn it on for "body"? Would be less to calculate, if it was only body parts.

Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present.

Ajax -- I just grabbed a freebie and checked it -- sure enough, it's working, but it appears to be based on vert versus poly or whatever that style of collision is called. It stops it, but there's a rather interesting quirk with ep, lol. It collides with itself. The general collision isn't very specific, so it pretty much calcs for everything. msg24_7: it's the groups themselves, so body part is the better answer.

I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong, but it doesn't seem to work when I'm using easypose dials. Easypose tentacles move right through a figure with collisions on with each figure and applying Collision Setting to Children and turning collision detection on. Collision detection seems to be working somewhat when moving Easypose tentacles with the Translate tool because the computer will freeze up for a minute when a collision does occur. Moving Easypose figures with the Translate is fairly awkward. For me, it's not as straightforward a process as I was hoping. It would have been great if the dials would allow wrapping an Easypose object around another figure.

That's the result I'm getting too, rreynolds. There hasn't been another SR since 4.1 or something has there? I can't understand why it works for Phil and Ynsaen but not for us.
