If you need a specific pattern then, in place of the mathematical function, you could use a grey scale image of it to pilot the distribution of colors...

Thanks Paul, I like that trick of putting two keypoints next to each other to get sharp transitions in the colour function. I hadnt thought of that, which is probably why I was having trouble. I agree, it should be a simple material to make a good beginner exercise :-)
