SolidWorks and SGI Launch 3D Instant Website Design Contest Worldwide Competition Promotes Web-based Engineering Design Visualization and Collaboration CONCORD, MA & MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - December 5, 2000 - SolidWorks Corporation, a leading provider of affordable, easy-to-use 3D CAD software for the mainstream market, and SGI Corporation (NYSE: SGI), the leader in high-performance computing technology, today announced the 3D Instant Website Gallery Contest. All users of SolidWorks 2000 software are eligible to enter their original designs published to the Web using SolidWorks' new 3D Instant Website tool. The contest is designed to demonstrate the power and ease-of-use of the new 3D Instant Website tool for Web-based design visualization and collaboration. The recently-launched 3D Instant Website tool, available inside SolidWorks software, enables users to quickly and easily create and publish live Web pages with 3D interactive content. It offers a simple connection to a password-protected, hosted server; support for both 2D and 3D data; collaborative templates to capture reviewers' feedback; broad platform support; and extensibility. Along with SolidWorks, SGI is on the forefront of enabling this functionality with its affordable, application performance-tuned visual workstations, including the Silicon Graphics 230, 330, 550, and the new Silicon Graphics Zx10TM . The 3D Instant Website Gallery Contest begins today and ends January 31, 2001. The winner of the contest will be announced and awarded the grand prize of an SGITM 230 visual workstation on February 7, 2001. In addition, the winner's designs will be featured at the SolidWorks World International User Conference, being held on February 11-14, 2001 in Orlando, Florida. "Today, a great deal of design communication still takes place by faxing or FedExing detail drawings, emailing large CAD files, or through SneakerNet," said Ilya Mirman, web business development manager for SolidWorks Corporation. "SolidWorks is committed to delivering Internet tools for communication of product designs. 3D Instant Website is an addition to our Internet collaboration toolbox, building on the success of the SolidWorks Viewer, eDrawings, and 3D Meeting. We are excited about this contest and are eager to see how companies, beyond the thousands who have already used 3D Instant Website, are implementing it to improve design communication." "It is a natural fit for SGI to team with SolidWorks to bring this contest to life," said Paul Chermak, vice president, Manufacturing Industry Marketing at SGI. "SGI's powerful visual workstations combined with the new SolidWorks 3D Instant Website tool enable our mutual customers to push the limits and make interactive design communication easy. We're pleased to partner with SolidWorks to make this event possible." The Grand Prize is a Silicon Graphics 230 visual workstation with the latest Intel Pentium III processor and SGI VProTM graphics. In addition, 10 first prizes (SGI Bomber Jackets) will be awarded in each of the following categories: Complex Shapes; Large Assemblies; Production-level Drawings; Sheetmetal Designs; SolidWorks Piping Designs; General Designs; Best Use of the Collaborative Template; Best Customized Template; Best Website NOT hosted on the SolidWorks Server; and Best Website Integrating eCommerce and 3D Visualization. Entries will be judged based upon originality, creativity, and graphic layout.
