THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce 4.1 Macintosh crashing? Any ideas?

I'm going to have to call Tech Support tonight, but does anyone here know of any issues with Bryce 4 (Mac) crashing when using Object Presets? I have a scene with a terrain (made into buildings), and 2 spaceships (.OBPs I got from the net). When I go to add a 3rd, or even sometimes just a second, or also sometimes just reposition the 2nd one, etc., Bryce locks up the machine tight! Have to use the power button to get out. This happens oftentimes by just clicking the triangle next to Create to even get into the presets menu. I'm using an iMac DV SE, 500 mHz, 256 meg of RAM, OS 9.04, and almost a gig of virtual memory. I've tried disabling exstentions, even down to OS 9.04 (Minimum, I think? Whatever is the lowest setting), and it makes no difference. I will say that the physical RAM is close to being used up when I go to add the 3rd object. Anyone run into a similiar problem? Thanks!

I would have to say it is the memory ... what size are the files that you are loading in? Also are you sure it locks? I know a lot of time it just kind of goes braindead when it is thinking about movign a figure one click because it is close to the memory ... 5 minutes later it is moved but it is just way slow ...

http://lightning.prohosting.com/~maccastl/401.html This (downgrade) solves lots of problems created by Corel. This file, for instance, could NOT be saved with Corel B4.1, but could with MetaCreations B4.01... also fixes many import errors.

Thanks. I'm going to download 4.01 tonight and try it. I'm not at the machine right now, so I don't know the size of the objects. the polygon count is up there - between 20,000 and 40,000. I haven't let it set for a long time, I can try that too. What normally happens, though, is that the box for Object Presets comes up, showing the Boolean object collection. It tries to show the first one in the preview box, and freezes after the first few pixels are drawn. I have a Windows machine sitting next to my iMac, but Bryce seems to run slower on it (it's a 600 mHz PIII with 128 - Ok Mac guys, let's not get into it ;-), but I may have to see if I get the same problem on it.

Try changing you system font from charcoal(default) to chicago(old pre-OS 8.6 default). Sometime this causes problems.

Found the problem. A model I downloaded (a Bryce preset) was corrupted or something. When I took it out, I could add as many objects as I wanted to. Thanks for all your input.
