Subject: Want to BUY a NASA Space Shuttle model

tedbragg ( ) posted Fri, 12 November 2004 at 11:12 AM ยท edited Thu, 07 November 2024 at 9:02 PM

I've looked here in the MP, scoured Google and been to every 3d site I can thik of, but I cannot find a model for the NASA space shuttle!! Of all the space-themed models on the net, you'd think SOMEBODY would make one of an STS. But nooooo, all I find are the Trek and SW stuff. I'm looking to find/BUY/whatever a textured STS model, just the orbiter, no boosters or fuel-tank. :edited to add: OK, I did find a couple on TurboSquid, but those are too much and they're for LW. Help me out here. I need this badly. I've got money to buy one in these formats: 3DS, PZ3, OBJ, or DXF. 50k to 200k polygon, nothing lower or higher. TIA

Have you tried 3D cafe? There are 3 but not sure on the quality? The largest is a lightwave file. http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/aircraft.asp Tim

http://www.lwg3d.org/v3/meshes.php?item=5 (you'll need to register) for one of the best Shuttles I've seen. registeration and the mesh are free. now, it's in LW format so we'll need to convert it.. Little Dragon! where art tho?

The ones at 3d cafe import into Poser like shattered glass; the bodies are all whacked out. Like somebody took a dremmel and cut out triangles in it. I have the LW file from LWG3d. Thanks for the heads up. Problem now is finding a converter program. hmmm... Oh yeah, I'm on a Mac, too so I'm kinda screwed I guess

Anim8or will convert for you. I don't model with it, I use it for that main reason.

haven't tried it yet, but it looks like the Amapi 6 version being offered on the Computer Art, 3d world, Digit (one of those, don't remember which), will also export to many different formats, including .obj, which I see used mostly in Poser. (as in the majority of models, it's a portable format..;)

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Anim8or or Amapi, though I tend to stick with Anim8or. You also need some sort of scaler. The missing trianles thing in Poser is a semi-illusion. The polygon normals get reversed. I've seen it with several models when converted to the .obj format. With the Poser grouping tool it is possible to sort this out without losing any imported grouping/materials info. Assuming you want to sort the visible holes... Open the grouping tool. The display in the Document Window changes. Make sure you have the full display, not the approximate boxes, when you move the viewpoint. Make a new group (you'll delete it later) and select all the polygons. There's a button which inverts polygon normals. Use it, and you get a rather odd effect. But any polygons that were wrong will now appear normal. And they're visible on the outside of the object. Simple to say, but sometimes a big fiddle. Remove those now-normal polygons from the group. Ctrl-click on them. Invert the group. Everything should be the right way around. You can leave the grouping tool and check. When you're sure, use the grouping tool and remove that temporary group from the list. Sometimes, there isn't anything there, but because of the way Poser defines polygon normals, compared to some other programs. a reverse normal is quite likely to be the cause.

There is a free shuttle at this site, not sure of the poly count but it`ll be low, I think. One thing I`m not sure about is that the downloads on this site all seem to be taken from the Taschen books/discs "500 3d objects vol 1&2" which I bought from Amazon.I presume he has permission for these to be on there. These are worth getting anyway, for about $35 each.

Not sure if these will help: http://www-graphics.stanford.edu/~tolis/toli/research/shuttle.html There are a few at Turbosquid, not free though
