Going in the complete OPPOSITE direction from Photo-Real, I've been making some experiments in Anime-Cartoon style rendering in Vue 5...

This is using a combination of techniques- that I am still working on...

Some experiments include turning off cast and receive shadows on materials to achieve a more "cel painted" look.

Obviously there is still more work to be done!

Here's an example with cast and receive shadows ON- to create a subtle shadow look...

Ultimately- this process can be developed into a fairly useful Anime-Cartoon rendering system within Vue 5 and Vue 5 Pro-- and tied into Vue's ANIMATION capabilities- would allow creation of fairly good quality work for videos or websites...

I've turned over to E-on my ideas and various techniques and they seem interested in developing it further- perhaps as a future feature in Vue 5 or maybe Vue 5 Pro. Basically it could become like another "environment" or atmosphere-like setup- essentially creating a specifically Non-Photo Real Space in which Anime and Cartoon style characters could be imported and rendered fairly easily- without a lot of technical tweaks that I'm doing now.

YOU ABSOLUTELY ROCK!!! Please share technical details of how you did this!

BTW- these types of scenes could also be converted to SWF using software like SWISH- so they would play very nicely on websites as either stills or as animations.

E-on might even want to eventually- in the future- offer SWF as a file saving option from Vue 5 or Vue 5 Pro...

Terrific use of the software. Excellent images.

the hula girl is awesome. as far as swf and flv export ive been pestering e.on for that for quite some time, obviously not needed since you can use both images and videos in your flash authoring application and work from there, but integrating swf and flv export would be quite easy to implement for e.on and improve vue as an all around web and media studio app quite alot, atleast as far as workflow goes.

Agreed, the hula girl is the best of the bunch. What do natural/architectural scenes turn out like?

Did these take a long time to render, or is it faster than a 'photo real' picture? Really good though, always wanted to do this in Vue ever since I did it a few times in Poser using the Toon node. You really do some great stuff here!!

Because this is still sort of a "beta" method of rendering, and will depend on what E-on might do to make this more simple- I'm waiting to hear back from them on their evaluations. BUT- there is a real possibility that E-on MIGHT include a full Cel-Shader feature in Vue 5 Pro- something like what the "Big 3D" apps have for Cel Shading. So if that happens, that will REALLY make all the Anime-Cartoon fans out there VERY HAPPY!...
