i had this wonderful idea that came to mind the other night. why not have an unoffical compentition of the bryce fourm people (the people who post and answer questions), which will be juged by anyone who posts on the Bryce fourm.
no prizes unless donated

not like the monthly challange but a spur of the moment contest. say a week's time to create and post. unlimited ideas, entries, and comments. the winner is the one who has the most comments, and highest ranking.

for example you could submit 5 projecte of biffernt Bryce creations for the contest. no limit on topics, anything you want.

Or, we could use the concept from CGtalk, where you start with a concept scetch, and post wips from several steps in the process, models, texturing, lighting etc, ending with the final image. Of course, this would require a great deal of work for the mods, so i can understand if theyre not too thrilled about the idea. :)

Renderosity has a challenge forum where any member can throw out any kind of graphics related challenge at any time. Several people do and then cross post to Bryce, poser, etc. forums with invitations to participate. Drac and Bryster slugged it out over the "Crystal Palace" just last month in this forum. All they did was to start writing posts and there it was, a challenge. What are you waiting for? It's easier to get forgiveness than permission. If its too off topic (and it doesnt sound like it) AgentSmith can move it to the challenge forum. If it violates the Terms of Service it can be pulled so no Mother Raper, Father Stabber themes. Or are you talking about some kind of "official" unofficial challenge? Do you want to call it unofficial but have AgentSmith put a link in the header and count the voting? I cant speak for him but Id say the chances are slim. Otherwise you can throw out your idea and see if it flies at any time. Just come up with a set of rules. When it starts/stops. Post work allowed? Imports? All work begins during the challenge period. Number of entries, etc.

Too hard to keep track of the various posts/threads involved. We still don't have sticky threads. I agree this sort of thing belongs in the challenge forum or like in wings all entries posted within the same thread but then that makes counting comments tough. Keep at maybe there is a way to do what you suggest and I'm just not seeing it.

I think the problem with rating entries in a contest by the ammount of views&comments is that these things are a bit of a popularity contest. Even if we don't want it to be about popularity, some artists are just very well known, have a large fanbase and such. Ofcourse it's no prob that they have fans, it's great for them :) but more often then not there will be less known artists making just as amazing artworks, yet they get fewer comments, simply because they are less famous. This is something you can't really stop, but it will make it impossible to objectively choose a best artwork based on the number of comments. Unless someone has a great idea to fix that?

The only way to fix a problem like that would be to remove the names from the entries, so that only the moderator would know whose is which.

would voting really be necessary at all?

MoonGoat ( ) posted Fri, 19 November 2004 at 6:54 PM

Yes. Contests must be determined by votes and not views. For obvious reasons.

electroglyph ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 10:19 AM

To have an anonymous contest you would need a place where people could post an image privately then have the image assigned a number and posted to a public gallery. Someone would have to keep track of whose name goes with what picture. If I were to post my image in a thread you would see my screen name. You would also need to be sure that none of the images had signatures. This is impossible for an unofficial contest. It would require a moderator with public and private access to a web space to do the functions required for anonymous posting and voting.

yes, this does seem to be turning into the typical renderosity contest. Hmmmm. How bout this. Everyone sends their images via email to one guy (me, since I don't post my crappy little renders anyhow) and he posts them in a forum. Although I have to admit this is getting rather insubordinate to the moderators. They're going to think we're trying to overthrow the system.
