THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Stoopid newbie question

I should know this, but don't :^( When you make an object, and save it to your presets, how do you save it so it reappears with the same point of origin as when you saved it?

It always bugs me that there's no visible directional axes - it's the main thing that stops me modelling in Bryce, I just can't remember, in default view, which axis is which. So I made a simple object (locked and hidden) to show the directions, with the generally-used colours
Green = Y
Blue = Z
Red = X (well, purple-red to avoid confusion with selected meshes)

Origin is set at 0.2, which is just above the grid. Thought it might be handy for other people as well, so saved it to my presets as obp. However, when I try re-inserting if from my presets folder it appears way way up high. It's a very large object, and it gets created with the bottom of the object resting on the grid plane (does that make sense?) with the middle-point miles up above :^(

Not much point in offering something like that to inexperienced Bryce users, if you have to include a ReadMe telling them how to select a locked object, unlock it, change the position on the Y axis, re-lock it, blah blah blah. Any suggestions? I suppose one way would be to drag the Y axis cylinder way up so the bottom is level with the other axes. hmmmnnnn wonder if changine the point of origin would sort it.......

I've seen quite a few instances where someone will save the entire bryce file for download. This preserves all the original presets & mats in a scene. You can create a folder for your own library of these. Otherwise just random Objects can be saved as Bryce objects to import to presets.

ICM, I don't understand your last sentence.

I can't even get a new primitive to appear in the center of my window. I usually have to go way off somewhere in Bryceland to look for it and then drag it over to where I'm working. I know there's a preference for getting new primitives to appear centered on your screen, but it doesn't work on my machine. Sorry, Pog, don't mean to hijack your thread. Just ignore this.

Bandolin: Preferences/create objects in view. It doesn't necessarily bring them to centre but you at least don't have to pan all over the place to find them.

Pog, the directional axis thing used to bug the heck out of me too. The way I get round it now is that I open Bryce and rotate the camera 45 degrees or so, the grid on the ground plane helps me get it lined up right. Once I've done that the x-axis is across the screen and the z-axis is depth. I saved that as a default.br5 and it opens that way for me all the time. As far as opening saved models goes they always open world center for me.

I also use the same technique as Claymor. I set my camera position as 0,0,0 along the x,y,z and save it as default.br5 and evertime Bryce starts, the camera starts at the same position. You'll then get x-axis as left-right, y-axis as up-down and z-axis as in-out of screen.

Thanks Claymor and Quest - I've ditched my directional thingy, followed your directions, and now know where I am on the screen :^)
