Subject: Making Thumbnails (we REALLY need a FAQ!)

Questions periodically come up about making thumbnails for the Gallery, and getting them below the 15K size limit. The main problem seems to be that many modern tools tag on lots of STUFF to a jpeg; comments, EXIF camera information, etc. This STUFF can be quite large. If you are using photoshop, resize your image to fit within the 200X200 pixel limit. Then save by using the File>Save for Web... menu item. The dialog shows the image quality anf file size for the various oprions. If you are not using photoshop, whatever program you are using may have similar capability. One very nice (free!) is irfanview. It allows you to do practically anything with thumbs. The example here is a 5.2K file. Finally, because of a Gremlin in our Galleries, it seems necessary to name the thumbnail file something different from the image file, (I append a "t"). Hope this helps.

Here is another free thumbnail prg that I've used from the beginning. I had to set it only once.. After that it's just a matter of finding the file you want to make a thumbnail of and the software does the rest.. File name stays the same . It just adds a tri in front http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/?Easy%20Thumbnails=2600

I've read it all! I dont recall seeing anything about making thumbs, but I could be wrong. Any volunteers to do a FAQ?

Hi. I appreciate the information about the thumbs, and the Gremlin. I never tried saving thumbs as a web image, but now I will. I figured it was a Troll, not a Gremlin. -coolj001 :-)

Thanks for the tutorial deemarie. I have never used Image Ready for thumbnails but now I will try. I usually use PS and just adjust the slider till the file is under 15k. Sometimes after reducing the image size, I copy the thumbnail, paste it into a new image, then adjust and save. For some reason it is usually smaller. -coolj001 :-)

And, you upload thumbnails using the same form as uploading the original image. Remember that the name must be different!

As a small addition to Misha's point. For example, doing something like: myposting (as main image) and mypostingsmall or mypostingthumb or mypostingthm etc (as thumb) This will stop the filename issues.
