Subject: Help with Poser Primatives, grouping and texturing

shante ( ) posted Sun, 12 December 2004 at 11:58 PM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 2:41 PM

I built a set (stage and an off-world-like dance floor) from Poser 4 primatives. All nicely constructed and lovingly textured and bump-mapped. But when I imported my characters the darn set was too small. I tried enlarging the parented elements but it created a freakin mess. I tried exporting the parented set from Poser 4 but for some reason when it was reimported as an .obj file it came back in with only one material setting for all the various elements in the set. Sooooo,,,how do I export the whole parented set with individual materials so I can bring it back into Poser and resize as one obj item and not have the thing fall apart on me as well as having it keep all the original materials settings?

I'm sure the good Doctor will turn up shortly with links to his multitudinous miscellany of tutorials but, in the meantime, run a search for 'Geep' and 'props' and you'll find a surfeit of erudition to satiate your hunger for knowledge. My head hurts.

Hi shante,

I am getting ready to do exactly what you are describing in my notebook called "Doc's (Technical) Notes."

If you are interested, you can find a copy of my notebook HERE.

Here are the basics:

  1. Make sure all the objects that are to be "glued" together into one object are properly grouped and textured.

  2. Export (to an .obj file) all the objects that you want to make into one object. This is Doc's "glue."

  3. Import the .obj file that you just exported back into Poser.

Now you can reScale the newly imported object to whatever size you want.

Ok?

Hey Doc! I did that. I parented all the items to a primitive square parent called "floor'. When placed in the library they work fine when recalled so I know they are properly grouped and parented. I exported them as an .obj file. I reimported the newly exported file as an .obj and it came in all nice and grouped and scaleable...HOWEVER...all the individual materials(textures and bumps) for all the detailed parts were gone and in their place I have one single mterial setting for THE WHOLE OBJECT! No good. I need to retain all those individual textures and bumps. Soooo...next page!? :)
