Subject: Newbie - Face Room - is it usable?

dgroncki ( ) posted Wed, 15 December 2004 at 8:53 AM · edited Thu, 15 August 2024 at 12:54 AM

Hi All, I've had Poser for awhile, though haven't used it. Just now getting into things and completed my first image in Bryce. I am considering making a picture for my daughter and am wondering how well the face room works in regards to mapping her face onto a figure? I would love to create a model of her and maybe create a scene with her and a horse, etc... but am not sure where to start. A couple questions: 1) do I (can I) use the models that come with Poser upon which to map a face or would I want to use some DAZ model? 2) if she is 10yo, is there a good model to use as a base for a 10 year old slender girl? 3) are there any good tuts out on the web on how to do a face mapping? 4) if you face map, what do you do as far as the rest of the body regarding texture color, etc... to try and blend the face tones with the rest of the body? Any help you could offer a newbie is MOST appreciated! thanks... dgroncki

(1) The Face Room only works with the Poser 5 figures that come with Poser 5. (2) Poser 5 has Penny, which is a female child that works with the Face Room. (3) I think Softriver did one, but I can't recall the URL. Anyone? (4) After you create your texture, Poser asks if you want the head texture to match the body texture. It then makes color adjustments.

  1. You have to use the P5 characters. The Face Room doesn't work for any other characters.

  2. Penny (the P5 girl) is your only choice if you want to use the Face Room.

  3. I haven't found any. But there's a Yahoogroup that might be able to help:

  1. You have to try and match the body texture with the face. This is one of the problems of the Face Room - it isn't easy.

Depending on what your daughter looks like, it might be easier to use a DAZ figure and trying to get a likeness with dial twirling, custom morphs, and the right texture. If you go this route, I would recommend the Young Teens, Luke and Laura. You may want to use the Laura PT figure - basically, a generation 3 head on the old MilGirl pre-teen body. There are more clothes for the PT than for Laura. The PT body looks younger, too. It's flat-chested, while Laura's body is starting to develop.

Isn't there a size limitation...512?

The new size limit (for service pack 4) is 2048 x 2048. THERE'S A CATCH, however ... You can only use original photos that are a power of 2. So 512 x 512, 1024 x 1024 or 2048 x 2048 original photos will end up with face textures of that size. BUT, if you use a 2000 x 2000 photo it will go to the next size down, or 1024 x 1024. A 4000 x 4000 photo will go down to 2048 x 2048.

The face room textures made for judy can work with victoria one and two, you could make the face in the face room and use the texture with vic1/2 to make the finished item.

Dr geep did a face room tutorial if you search this forum for dr geep you will find it.

You can actually import photographs (front and side view) of your daughter into the face room and use them as templates to create the face of your daughter onto the P5 girl. I tried it with my Son on the P5 boy and it worked quite well but you will have to be patient and make lots of adjustments to get it right, but it is highly possible to get an exact likeness of your daughter in the Poser 5 face room, absolutely!

Try and use photographs that have little or no shadows, because large shadows on the texture are a pain to get rid of. I would suggest that you use expressionless photos too, to make it easier to line up the face parts.

I don't like the Face Room.

As others have stated, the F.RM. is limited to P5 characters only. In addition to which: it's frustrating to use. I've only seen a few, extremely rare, examples of anyone actually achieving good results with the Face Room.

Perhaps a few individuals -- through hard work and loads of patience -- have been able to do something with the F.RM.. Personally, I'm too lazy to expend lots of effort on little return.

Basically, the F.RM. uses an extremely crippled version of a program known as FaceGen, from a company called Singular Inversions.

FaceGen itself is expensive software. The advanced versions of the program require remote system access for customized face generation. IMHO -- taken together, these facts make FaceGen next to useless.

Mind you -- I've seen one or two examples of excellent results through the use of FacGen. But only one or two. Perhaps somebody is creating tons of faces using FaceGen -- but I haven't seen it.

Most of us don't care to pay the $500.00+ penalty for those kinds of results.

It's easier, as has been suggested -- to purchase copies of Laura/V3/S3, and their respective morph packages.

You can do wonders with the DAZ figures. Relatively painlessly, too.

And for a lot less than $1000.00.

Agree to a point Xenophonz. I did manage to get a reasonable likeness of my Son with it although he thought it looked S**t and nothing like him :-( That said it did take me a long time to achieve even that. I haven't used it since, preferring as you say to use the V3 face morphs.
