THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OT - save your bookmarks :^(

Everyone else prob'ly does this anyway, but I've always been bad at saving my bookmarks - I lose them every time I reformat or change pc. But from now on I intend to be very virtuous - I've just exported all my bookmarks, zipped 'em, and e-mailed to my Yahoo account. So in case of calamity I can re-install them. I have so.o.o.o.o.o.o many great texture and tutorial sites, I couldn't bear to lose them all again.

Hey...good thinking. Yeah, I back up my Faves, but never thought about zipping them and e-mailing them to myself (for that extra added step) Thanks. AS

Thats a good point Pog, if you have that capability, why not use it. On every new version of MSN Explorer I have written their tech support asking how to export my bookmarks, the reply has always been that, at the moment that cannot be done. Being on dial-up it would be especially hard to recover all lost bookmarks. If anyone out there knows of a way to export the bookmarks from MSN Explorer, please divulge your secret.

I used to export as an HTML file and them upload that to a page on my website and there by have access to my favourites on any Internet machine and it's an offline backup.

I just copy the folder on a diskette every month or two. I'm using Microsoft Explorer and if I have to rebuild the image of my hard disk (C:) with Drive Image, I just copy again from my diskette.

Sorry to be so dumb, Quest, but what's MSN Explorer? I use mostly Internet Explorer, in that you just go to File > Export and export the bookmarks as an HTML file. It saves out as a webpage, which you can right-click on, and send to a zip.

Quest ( ) posted Thu, 23 December 2004 at 11:14 AM

MSN is my Internet provider and they have MSN Explorer as an alternative browser to Internet Explorer which is just a little more polished IE with a pastel look but they dont have that option. I just tried saving the Favorites page as HTML, it doesnt work. :(

With WinXP there's a favourites folder under Documants & Settings that you should be able to zip up for safe keeping. I don't know where MSNExplorer keeps it's favourites as I haven't got it installed but with any luck it should be closeby.

I've been looking for the MSN folder that would contain the favorites but can't find one. BTW, I'm on Windows ME.

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Thu, 23 December 2004 at 12:48 PM

your best bet for finding it (if you haven't tried it already) is to just do a search on the C: Drive for the word "favourites", I've only ever touched WinME once a very long time ago never again!

Obviously you'll have tried Help in MSN Explorer? That's how I found how to export the favourites. I searched under bookmarks, favorites, favourites.

Erlik ( ) posted Thu, 23 December 2004 at 3:47 PM

I guess he won't find "favourites" in MSN. He will probably find "favorites". :-P Quest, MSNE apparently marks the file favorites.XML as hidden. So either tell Windows to search for hidden files, or tell them to show ALL files. They should be in "C:Documents and SettingsusernameApplication DataMSNUserData{*************}", where the asterisk denotes a variable, as they say. Check: http://www.mainsoft.fr/freeware_en.htm At the bottom, there is MSN Favorites Export Toolkit. It's a little program that, as the name says, can export MSNE favorites.

Pog had already done all that a long time ago. Erlik, that did the trick, thank you very much! Already its a done deal all zipped away to safety. Now why couldnt the techies over at MSN tell me about this little lifesaver? And thank you Pog for starting this thread with sound advice.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Thu, 23 December 2004 at 7:31 PM

Now, me, I switched to an alternative to IE ... called "MyIE". It lets you group your bookmarks so that they all pop up in tabbed pages. Then I wrote a macro that copies the groups file to each of my computers so that they are always current. It is a shame to lose your booksmarks ... so save them however you do it, but be sure you do save them.

Could be worse, could be raining.

Well, being the semi-OC type I am, I have a database..1,948 URLs for Bryce, Poser, mats, materials, meshes, other things that begin with 'm', etc. About every 3 months I go through and cull the 404 sites..so I'm covered You can try this, it works as well as IEEEE!!!, and doesn't seem to be as vulnerable to things like C(r)ool Websearch..

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit
