is there a way that you can keep a charactor after you have it all dressed in poser itself so that you can reuse it at a later date? without the document window on it just a figure by itself i hope that makes sence

Select the character. Open your Library panel, browse to one of the character folders, and click the plus (+) button at the bottom of the panel. If the character is wearing conforming clothes and hair, Poser will ask if you want to save just the character alone, or the whole thing (including clothes).
