Subject: Question about material nodes and transparencies in P5

cyberscape ( ) posted Thu, 06 January 2005 at 12:23 AM · edited Sat, 31 August 2024 at 8:35 AM

Still trying to get the hang of the material room in P5 and I just had an idea. In P4, when I apply a transparency to (let's say) the catsuit which removes the legs and arms, I remember having to set the highlights/reflections to black in order to keep the hidden parts from appearing in a "ghost" form with a final render. This made it a real pain to create pvc or other shiny outfits with the catsuit. Now I'm curious. Is there a way in P5 to use transparencies whereby I can apply a material node (such as pvc or latex) to just the parts that aren't being removed? In other words, is it possible to make a pvc bikini out of a catsuit without having the "ghost" effect in the final render? If so, please advise me on how to do this. Or better yet, maybe a Dr. Geep tut? Uh oh, the NaySayGuy in a pvc bikini? Now THAT would be WRONG! :O

Yes, that's not only possible but fairly easy. Plug your transparency map into the specular colour and/or specular value channels, so that the object has a bright highlight where it's opaque and no highlight where it's transparent.

COOL! That actually works! Thanks Ajax! Maybe now I can start making some cool outfits for the V3 catsuit and/or the Morphing Fantasy Dress that will be worthy of putting in freestuff!
