Subject: OT - odd computer behavior after RAM upgrade. Heard of this?

cyberscape ( ) posted Mon, 24 January 2005 at 3:59 AM · edited Fri, 26 July 2024 at 5:17 AM

This should probably be in the tech forum but, I think more people will see it here. I recently upgraded my RAM from 256mb to 1gig. As of now, P5 and V3 are very happy. However, when I use my computer for just folder browsing and organizing the runtimes, every so often the entire font for XP "changes"! I mean BIG TIME changes! Imagine looking at your desktop with a window open when all of the sudden, every bit of text on the screen goes from English to Japanese (or Chinese)!! EVERYTHING! Including the clock and the start menu. The only fix I have right now is to hit restart in the shutdown menu. Then I might not see this behavior again for as much as a full day. Any ideas? Ever seen this before? If it's a virus, I gotta admit, it's quite a creative one! Naturally Norton sees nothing :P

Pardon the insulting question, but you did use the right sort of RAM? It is seated properly? Try the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic - it worked for me...

There is hardware technical forum here just FYI ;)

I only have Poser 4, but had a similar problem, where all my text got corrupted. It was related to my ATI graphics card. For me it happened while viewing certain web pages. It would start with the page I opened and then spread to everything on the desktop and any opened program. From what I was able to figure out fro ATI's web site this was related to an old type font that the card could not handle. ATI has a file that you can download, that is suppose to fix this but I never had any success. My advise, if your using an ATI card, is to try different drivers some work a little better than others.

What operating system are you using? Win 98 doesn't like anything above 512 MB RAM and needs tweaks in the sys.ini to get to grips with the 1 Gig. Don't know about ME: 2000 and XP should be okay with the one Gig.

Thanks from er... both of you "Bobs"! Nothing insulting about the memory install question - people ten times smarter than me can be quite dangerous around hardware:) The RAM is definitely right in terms of installation and proper bus speed. I'll be running Memory Diagnostic tonight or tomorrow in order to see what's up with that. Bob143: I did install an ATI Raedon 8500 about 2 monthes ago but, this "language converter" anomaly didn't appear until last week (when I installed the new RAM). Either way, I'll check with ATI for any updated drivers. Thanks for the help! dlk30341: Read line one of the original post. samsiahaija: Read line six of the original post.
