(Beginner level info; as such I will not get into advanced options/ techniques, or even most of the available cloth room settings, fer that matter. As always, this is "A" way to do this, not "The" way...it works fer me & is simple; just thought I'd share my observations in return fer what I've gained from others.) Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin... Poor Aiko has no clothes, whatever shall she do?

Well, like any other woman, she gonna raid her friends closet...Judy's in this case. For simplicity's sake, she'll grab a Dynamic dress (P5WomanBeachDress). Generally when I raid a "closet", I'll strip any textures/ set all materials to a basic white. This is for clarity while posing, & it prob'ly lessens up the sys resources needed. Hmmm....Judy seems to be somewhat larger than Aiko, so we'll hafta do to some fitting. Start w/ yr figure in a "default" or "zero" pose. Because yr average torso is "bean" or "kidney" shaped, we gonna xrot the dress a bit to match the curves of the body & dress as closely as we can w/o breakin' out the magnets or anythin'. I like to use Element Style> Line fer this part. "Honest, Aiko....we ent tryin' to sneak a peek"

If ya ever read any tuts on Dynamic clothin', I'm sure that you've heard that "pokethru is yr enemy". BAH!!! It ent good, but don' let it fluster ya. The important part I've found is to make sure ya have a "solid foundation" to yr cloth (I dunno if there's a specific term fer this). In this case, that would be the neckline & shoulder straps that "support" the rest of the dress. If this area is inside yr figure, chances are Poser will either stall, or yr cloth will fall right thru yr figure.

OK...we as close as we gonna get, so we'll make sure the cloth is properly parented (Object> Change Parent). I usually select my parent according to the cloth; i.e. if it covers the torso, I'll parent to the Chest...skirts would parent to the Hip, etc. Off to the Cloth Room...

Then ya wanna Clothify yr dress...simple enuf. When ya get to Current Collision Object, simply select every element that the cloth will touch. This means that if yr plannin' a "hand on hip" pose, ya gotta select the respective hand/ finger elements regardless of whether the cloth Drapes over them. Before leavin' I like to adjust Collision Offset as well...this determines the distance from the cloth to the figure. A cotton dress obviously won't hover 1" off yr figure's shoulders, so I usually drop this to .25; a small enuf measure that it'll look natural. I won't get deeply into the differnt Cloth Groups, but in this instance I put the buttons in the Rigid Decorated Group, 'cuz they're...uhhhhh...rigid decorations. On this dress that was simple, as the buttons have their own material assigned, so I hit Edit Rigid Decorated, then Add Material> buttons.

Now fer the Magic! Go back to Simulation Settings & hit Calculate Drape. POOF!!! Pokethru go buhbye! If ya still have some, add a few drape frames & recalculate.

Now that we ready to actually pose Aiko & her dress fits, I once again go back to Sim settings & set the Drape Frames to zero. This is jus a lil' time saver...no need to keep calculatin' drape when everthin' fits. Scince we din't touch Simulation Range in the Sim settings, we have a default 30 frames to animate our cloth with (yes, we're animatin'...thas the whole "secret" to dynamic clothin' whether yr project is a still image or a full movie). Move the frame slider to frame 10 & apply yr chosen pose. This will give yr cloth 10 frames to form itself to the pose, & 20 more to let gravity "settle" the cloth in a (hopefully) natural manner. As an added bonus, it gives ya 20 "poses" fer the cloth to select from. Now all ya gotta do is hit the Calculate Simulation button & sit back. Only ting left to do is add a nice tex to the dress & Ta DAAA!!!

One final note; this method will not "VacuForm" a piece of clothing to a figure, but it will (within reason) make somethin' thas close fit a lot better. Good luck, & happy Clothin' 8-)

thankyou for sharing this, I can use all the help I can get in the cloth room...oh, thanx for the chuckles to start the day as well! :D

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

One question, though: On the "Simulation Settings" dialog box, what is the significance of "Steps per Frame" being set to "2" (the default value)? I have been playing with dynamic cloth (mostly the hi-res square) and changing the "Steps per Frame" value doesn't seem to really do anything. --John

PhilC's curren't "almost free stuff" is a set of morphing mannequins that make this kind of fitting easier.

FreeBass ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 6:52 PM

JHoagland; Dunno, I ent noticed it do a great deal, either. I assume is like damnear everthin' else...bigger = more Sys resources, so I leave it alone.
