Subject: Bryce 3d Space Battle?

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 10:02 PM · edited Wed, 06 November 2024 at 6:35 PM

Ok, yeah it's the space battle questions again, sorry, HAS anyone or is there in existance that I can d/l and watch, a 3D space Battle done ENTIRELY in Bryce, (well, excapt for the ships, or not,) But I mean EVERYTHING ELSE? If you guys know anything on this, please let me in on it, ok? I'm am in the planning, storyboard (well just "simple"sketches) of the different transitions, chases, firings, explosion, etc. So I need to "look" atsomething to get a better perspective, of this, I AM a noob still to Bryce, BUT LOVE IT!!! Anyone, anyone?

xenic101 ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 10:07 PM

A long, long time ago I had done animation of a ship getting shot down, and crashing into a planet. The computer I did it on is dead and buried, so I can't really help with an example. Just felt like typing.

foleypro ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 10:32 PM

Hmmm I know that bryce has been used in doing the effects for a short story or a Fan film...Planetary Traveler was done in Bryce but you have to pay for it I think...

ysvry ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 10:36 PM

has any body done a porn movie in bryce or is there in existance that I can d/l and watch, Just felt like typing too. :P

for some free stuff i made
and for almost daily fotos

xenic101 ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 10:48 PM

lol, ysvry's feeling frisky tonight. ps, I could make one of those, but someone else would have to script it for me.

Mrdodobird ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 10:50 PM

I did a 3d space battle done entirely in Bryce a couple years ago. I got it around on a tape. I could put it up and compress if it would be worth it, but it's only, like, 7 seconds (but it's a very sweet 7 seconds, let me tell you. Some of my best Bryce animation, IMO)

foleypro ( ) posted Sun, 27 February 2005 at 10:59 PM

Yes do it...Flash it

I have several clips I rendered of a battle between human and alien space fleets. I think I can offer some advice if you want. Unfortunately, I don't have a website currently, but if I compress a file with Divx or somesuch I could email, or FTP you an example. The ships were built in Wings, but the beam FX were done by animating Bryce cylinder primitives(parented to each ship) and adjusting their material ambience, transparency and position/length. It really can be done quite effectively. When I render an animation I usually save it as a .bmp sequence. Here's a frame as an example.

Nice ships, danamo, where can I get one?...=)

i have a couple of spaceship scenes on my website if i can give any help, i'd be happy to offer my experience of animating in bryce.

Experience is no substitute for blind faith.

Danamo, when it comes to animation, do you compress your video with AfterEffects, or with something else? I'm curious, having a hell of a time with After Effects 4, these days. I've reinstalled it ten times in the last year... Maybe I should just upgrade to 6?

pakled ( ) posted Mon, 28 February 2005 at 9:50 AM

pronphagory? not in Bryce..I think if you want that, you need to go to Psr..;)

danamo ( ) posted Mon, 28 February 2005 at 10:40 AM

Well LSD, I'm still tinkering with various compression schemes. It's been said, and I believe it to be true, that video compression is as much an art as a science. I have managed to squeeze a 5 sec. Bryce video clip(480x360,30 fps seq. file=86.8MB) down to around 2MB and still retain good image quality. I have had some decent results compressing to Mpeg4 in Premiere Pro, and believe it or not, coming out of Quicktime Pro. Also, XL Cleaner is a very good standalone compression app. This is one area(of many) where I would ask Mr. Dodobird for his advice 'cause he's really into animations and video.

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Mon, 28 February 2005 at 8:51 PM

Thanks to everyone!!!!! Ok, those who have videos to send me so I can watch and learn, thanks. Also, those who offered help to me, thanks as well. Here is my e-mail: joeyhoover@yahoo.com Please fell free to email me anything you have, ok? AND as always, thanks again for your support!!!!!!!!!!!

danamo ( ) posted Mon, 28 February 2005 at 10:37 PM

Hello JBC. I sent you a new copy of my file(via email) that I managed to compress down to 1.22MB using Divx. I hope you can get it to play. I made a multi-plane background of moving stars in the original file by using several transparent overlay layers that moved at various speeds in front of the background starscape(the further from the camera, the slower the speed)The nebula is a 3D object, as are some of the nearest stars. The only bad thing about the severe compression I used is that you might not be able to see this. HTH, Danamo

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 11:49 AM

I did see it, AND WWWWWWWOOOOOOWWWWWWWW, it looked good! "Could I do the lazers in AE? Or would it be better in Bryce? Just wondering. I am also interested in making a ship explode after one fires at it. After reading numerous tutorials on this, I am still not sure on how to make it "look" right. Any help on this is gladlt app'd. Here is my concept: (yeah it is lame, but hey???) The Empire, Romulan Star Empire and the Borg have united to Tri-Rule the Universe (galaxy) and the Combined efforts of the Rebellion, the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and ____ insert another group here, are trying to stop them. It is an EPIC battle lasting a LONG time, (I'll do multiple scenes, Multiple parts of it). Yeah I know what your thinking, HE IS BRAND NEW TO BRYCE, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? Well I want to do this for my personal enjoyment, AND to let others SEE that Bryce CAN accomplish this as well as , (well we will see) Maya, or 3dsmax. I really want to do this, AND I AM GOING to. I am OPEN TO ANY/ALL suggestions, tutorials, pointers, hints, opoinions, BUT THIS CONCEPT I SHALL NOT WAVER from, WHY? I love space battles, AND I WANT TO DO IT!!!!! So, anyone besides the one's who have already offered, want to post tutorials, links, or other stuff, (models) etc, Want to contribute to the cause, Cause I need a little statoff help here, OK? AND THANKS AHEAD OF TIME, I WILL INCLUDE your name, WEBSITE ADDRESS< OR WHATEVER IN THE CREDITS, IF YOU WISH!!!!!!!!!! Hey, Free HERE DUDES, and DUDETTES!!!!!!! WHAT SAY YE?

Rayraz ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 1:17 PM

Interesting project, but you may find you'll need a year of rendertime for just the final render :-P let alone testrenders! LOL

danamo ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 1:26 PM

Yes, you could do the lasers in AE, or in PS if you render your ani as a seq. file(individual .bmps). If you have a "video paint" plug-in or program you can add laser beams that way. I did the beams in Bryce itself, just to see if I could, and I think it holds up pretty well. The only thing I added post rendering was the lens-flare glow when the ships are firing.
Realistic explosions can be problematic since the present version of Bryce doesn't have particles(maybe in Bryce 7?) but could be a doddle to add in post if you have AE and either "ParticleIllusion"(www.wondertouch.com), or AlamDV (http://fxhome.com) which give you the ability to composite great explosions, laser beams, lightsabers, etc.over your base "footage". Glad you found the ani interesting.:-)

Rayraz ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 1:35 PM

Drawing a laser and putting it on a 2D plane in bryce would work also. It renders pretty fast and allows you to choreograph the lasers right there inside your 3D scene.

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 2:32 PM

Well Rayraz: 1. I'm gonna do Small scenes, render them, changees the scenes, render them so froth and so on, I'm gonna do the lazers in AE, render that, pull all of the renders in premiere pro and do transitions, etc, in there, I do not think it will take that long, seriously cause I am MOTIVATED, (yeah, eith my exp. it will take 5 years) LOL Danamo: I have AE 6.0 Pro, How Exactly, Step-by-step her can I go about doing the following, please be specific, please, cause I have to visualize as I read ok: Sequence: Tie fires at a "wounded" X-wing, (I can do the lazer beams in AE no problem) 1. The blast "makes contact" with X-wing hull. 2. The X-Wing (still in flight) glows bright yellow, and explodes... 3. We see particles of ????(ship hull) material for a second or 2. 4. Camera "sees" empty space where X-wing "was". Now, a few questions: 1. How does one achieve this? remember I can do the blasters in AE. 2. How do I do the explosion (AE, and if so how?) OR in Bryce, and if so how?) 3. While rendering in Bryce, after the 1st second of "getting Fired on" How can I make the X-wing "disappear" One "other question: Alrady posted this , did not ge a "good" response, but thanks to those that tried, How can I do the "cloaking" and "decloaking" effect? Since it will be in Bryce that I have to "put" the ship into, doesn't it have to be "done" in Bryce? Hey I have an idea? Do you two guys get into the chat room here very much? If so, could you talk me through these effects, OR maybe Write a step-by-step tutorial, WITH screnshots? Well, anyway, I am motivated and I want to begin, what do you guys think? BTW: joeyhoover@yahoo.com for yahoo messenger joeychoover@hotmail.com for msn messenger Email me and tell when to be on there and I ahall: It it 2:34 my time currrently , I'll check my yahoo email each bottom and top of the hour foe messages today, ok, AAND TTHHAAAAANNKKSSSSS guys!!!!!!!!!!

Rayraz ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 3:07 PM

well.. to give ya an idea, I made a 96 second animation once, rendered it in small shots. took 625 hours to render in total.

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 3:11 PM

ok. Thank you, I'm still gonna do it though. I knew form other boards that render time was like centuries but still, gonna do it.

danamo ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 3:14 PM

But, ya have to figure Rayraz's average render has at least a BILLION polygons in it and he's probably taking an hour a frame to render those puppies, lol. My average frame renders at 5min. or less.:-P

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 3:15 PM

So danamo, did you read the above post about the questions?

danamo ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 3:29 PM

file_193108.jpg

Oh, maybe you'd like to see "the good guys". These are some of the human ships. I think I was looking at ducks on a nature program the day I designed them...

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 3:31 PM

ok.

danamo ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 4:29 PM

Well, I admire your enthusiasm JBC, the people who advance the fastest in Bryce and 3D are the ones who set themselves the biggest challenges, and stick it out, always pushing their ability. If you would like, I could do a short tut, or two and add them here in the Forum as another post. That way I could add some screenshots to more easily explain how I would do it. Besides, I suspect there are as many recipes for explosions as there are Brycers and you may get more effective feedback and info that way if others add to the thread.

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Tue, 01 March 2005 at 4:31 PM

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh sorry, the key stuck. That woudl be awesome, and screen shots JUST LIKE A DREAM, and I thanks you, sir!!!!!!

Okay, I sent a shot 4sec explosion ani to JBC, and if he likes it I'll finish the tut. No sense in wasting or duplicating effort if it's not what he's looking for.

JimBobCarl ( ) posted Wed, 02 March 2005 at 10:25 PM

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, that is EXACTLY eaht I'm needing Dynamo Thank you!!!! Oh, just a thought, as for the "not bing there" (transparent) appearing reappearing (cloaking and Decloaking) know how I'd accomplish that? Hey Yous should post that it looks GREAT!!!!! Any thoughts on the above???

file_193112.jpg

You want something like this?

The gif is poor quality so doesn't look great and full cloak is only for 1 frame but it gets the idea across.

  1. Make sure there is a keyframe with the full regular texture.
  2. Move the time scrubber to where you want full cloak.
  3. Select all parts of the object with the same texture (easier done if they have been assigned to famalies).
  4. Go to material lab and select blend transparency from the drop-down menu and then set transparency to 100.
  5. Do this for all material groups of the ship. (warning if you just select the whole ship it will just take on a random material of the ship).

To uncloak follow the same steps except set transparency to 0.
