THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Question about using Terrains for making objects.

Arctic_Scorpio ( ) posted Mon, 07 March 2005 at 8:31 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 2:24 PM

Hi there, hope are all well this evening.. I have been using terrains lately for making many of my objects in Bryce. I create greyscale images, and apply to the other items. Say for example a nice looking cushion with the tufted buttons. I am thinking I might start offering some of them in free stuff.. but wanted to know from the "Pros" if this modeling idea is a good one, or one I should get out of using. Thanks for any input You have

It is good for Bryce but really for Bryce only. (maybe soem other landscape programs)If you could export them to another program you would have a very high poly mesh that would be difficult to render. So what is good for Bryce is not always good for another program. Generally they woudl be fine for other Brycers to use as well. But outside of Bryce not so useful.

If you wanted to share your terrains, but the terrain image map in the freestuff, then all the Brycer's have to do is import it themselves. It's much more practical then uploading the model, and they can make neccesary changed (unless you specify not to).

dvd_master is wise.

Arctic_Scorpio there is a guy on another 3d site that builds models for bryce using terrains. I have all the ones he has done, so far there is a city, 2 spaceships and 6-7 buildings. I think the only problem he had with them was the file size which was huge on some. One i downloaded was 21megs/mob which only contained 4 pieces of terrain in to make the model which was textured.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Yes, that is correct CrazyDawg. Between the high polys and the textures an aweful amount of space is taken up with these models. Although it can be quite challenging and rewarding to model in Bryce, it can also be quite time consuming and tedious. That's why some people go running to other free 3D modeling programs to import into Bryce for rendering. Who knows, maybe in a future version of Bryce you might be able to do some real modeling.

Well having read all that, I have just checked and my mostly terrain built bridge in freestuff has had over 800 downloads so far, so there is a market for this sort of model.

i concur, my terrain built ruined city has been a very popular object for downloads since day one, i would agree that offering the greyscale maps would be the simplest way to go.

Experience is no substitute for blind faith.

I used terrains for the hulls of my ships in Freestuff, quick and easy based on photo textures.Get the approximate shape in terrain editor,copy/paste the greyscale image to psp, make final adjustments by copy/pasting back and forth. I now use other modelling software but thats how I got started.Dont forget that terrains are exportable as .obj,3ds,...etc. Good luck!

CrazyDawg got a link that other 3D Site with the models?

ysvry ( ) posted Tue, 08 March 2005 at 7:20 PM

as i said before making objects with the landscape editor is very uneconomic, especially on straights, hope they make some optimize routine in the new bryce 5.5 to overcome this otherwise handy modeling tool.

for some free stuff i made
and for almost daily fotos

Analog-X here is the link you asked for. you have to be a member. look on the right column for free stuff then go to the bryce free stuff and look for things done by Gendragon.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

For strickly bryce I think its great.. I did my Cross or Redemption that way. For Bryce users its a great freebie.. cause all that matters is the end result.

I LOVE modeling with terrains. (as some of you know) Yes, if you want to offer any in the freestuff area, that would be great. Yet, as mentioned, the file sizes can get ridiculous. Best way to do it, is just offer the terrains up as jpg's, if possible. That way is the smallest in kb/mb. AgentSmith

It seems all of Gendragon's stuff is not available for download anymore, too bad. There are some nice buildings there.
