Subject: More DEM import questions

Can someone confirm whether or not there is a dem terrain size import limitation in Vue 5 Infinate? Through recent experimentation I discovered that Vue 4 Professional does not have the annoying terrain size import limitation as Vue 5 Esprit and Vue 4 Esprit had. I just imported a 3 meter resolution DEM terrain that is 7100 x 4100 and though it took it a bit longer to load, it still brought it in and is letting me work with it (whereas with Vue 5 it would simply bring in a bunch of junk), it comes it at 70 million polys just by itself, but man is it worth it. I won't be able to test my 3 meter resolution Mt. St. Helens terrain (which is somewhere around 8100 x 8100) till Monday but I wanted to check and see if the import options in Vue 5 Infinate are the same as Vue 4 Pro or if they have been limited like they are in Vue 5 Esprit. If they are as they are in Pro then I will definately have to purchase Vue 5 Infinate in the near future, as more and more it's becoming clear that Vue 5 Esprit is limited in a number of areas that I really need at the moment.

I wish I could help you with some info, but I'm not a lucky V5:I user just yet. I just wanted to say I'm really looking forward to seeing your 3m terrain in Vue. And if you need any help sharing it in a Vue format (because of the size), let me know. I'd be glad to host it. I'm anxious to see some apples-to-apples comparisons if the various landscape apps and this seems one of the best ways to do it. - Oshyan

Thank Java Jones, I'll let you know how it goes getting the terrain into Vue 4 Pro and then over to Vue 5, even if it doesn't work I've still got the assembled version that's fairly decent, it just needs seam line tweaks every once and a while depending on where the camera ends up. Here's a quick render to show how far I ended up getting with bringing in chunks and aligning them accordingly within Vue.

Just thought I'd let everybody know what the latest was on importing the larger terrain into Vue Pro. I'm not sure if this is because it's Vue 4 Pro and whether or not this will be fixed in Vue 5 Infinate but importing the larger terrains (this doesn't happen when importing smaller chunks and manually aligning them) causes the "stepping" problem we were observing early on, apparently Vue 4 Pro seems to be converting it to a 16 bit image when importing, and since Vue imports with an awkward vertical scale (meaning the terrain has to be scaled up vertically to how it should really look) gently sloped areas are becoming "stepped" in the process. Not sure why it does it with the larger terrains but not the chunks, but it does. I'll let you know as I continue to investigate.
