Subject: Not impressed with p6... so far...

alamanos ( ) posted Mon, 21 March 2005 at 11:16 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 6:08 PM

I've been playing with p6 for about 4 hours...i even took 1/2 the day off...i was so excited..my excitment turnded to letdown after a few hours.. here's a quick review. good and bad.. good. 1. open gl preview... works great love it.. ati 9600 2. i'm getting many texures not found from my p5 library. about 1/2 the stuff i load has missing textures. 3. can't delete frames from animation main screen 4. Jessi.. nice face but no face morphs.. have to use the face room to modify her. Don't really like her body, only three FBM, doesn't accept v2 texures like Judy. 5. James same as above. 6. the kids... no face morphs and worse not even compatible with face room. What's up with that? 7. image based lighting... renders fast but no shadpows. so pretty useless.. does not support HDRI only jpgs. 8. Ambient occlusion... takes for ever and the shadows it creates leave funny artifacts. No where near as good as Vue. 9. p4 render engine runs about 20% slower than p5 10, file seem to save faster. poser also loads faster. 11. winter Queen... looked but haven't seen her anywhere. bottom line... p6 is more like a toy..no real usefull improvments other than opengl. To bad .. i really wanted to be impressed..

for the price of poser6 we should have some face and body morphs to cover some basic character types. #6 is a big let down. They should have have put a body room in to go with the face room.

Is it available now? No longer being presold? You can buy it and download it right now?

"You can buy it and download it right now?" Yes.

I am suprised at the poor quality of the Jessi model. She has shoulder problems worse than Vicki (I never thought THAT would be possible), her foot/ankle/lower leg 'sculpting' looks very bad, same with hands, and her body "shape" is just not great. I am basing this not on the renders here in the forum of people just throwing things up, but rather in the product sales images in content paradise. Also, yggdrasil is reporting alarming FireFly render slowdown against the Jim Burton benchmark. Like double. alamanos, can you explain what you mean by this: 3. can't delete frames from animation main screen ::::: Opera :::::

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 12:03 AM

Also this: if jessi has no face morphs.... Morphing her face into a new character in the face room, I don't mind that. But what about expressions during animation? If she has no morphs, including phoneme settings, what is the approach? I don't get it. ::::: Opera :::::

You mean people actually use the figures that come with Poser? ;0)

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

Not for nothing but what will you guys do for content with these new figures? Everything is V3, M3 & DAZ characters. I think people are jumping the gun too quickly with this new release.

arcady ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 12:27 AM

Everything V3, M3, and DAZ character because past versions of Poser never shipped with characters good enough to compete. Or at least that's how I understood it to work... May be wrong though, I found Judy to be a fairly decent model, but I didn't do a deep look. Money shortflow has kept me from ordering Poser 6, which has the sole benifit of letting me see what problems others have with it before I buy. I almost ordered today, I was going to cut my midday lunch budget next month out and use that to get it... :p

Truth has no value without backing by unfounded belief.

I thought I read somewhere that Jessi came with 135 morphs. Am I wrong? Was I dreaming? Even so, doesn't it support the morph injection system? If so, I'm sure the market will be flooded with all kinds of mesh-altering dru...I mean morphs. Frankly, I wouldn't use Jess the way she is; I'd stick with V3 until they could soften Jess up a bit. That could change tomorrow though, if the need for a female weight lifter came up.

Sorry to hear that you guys found disappointments in Poser6. It is possible that CL had to rush P6 into marketplace for some reasons. Give them some time to fix problems. I am fully aware about shadow problem. CL need to consider abandoning it and hopefully they will adopt OpenGL's Gelato in next Poser's release. (OpenGL's Gelator is used for professional films.) It is fortunately that CL took in OpenGL for preview and I hope they will take in Gelato for renderer. Jessi and James have no face morphs and only three body morphs? That's very surprising, and not particularly good news for anyone who doesn't want to use the face room. I'm like arcady in that I wanted to see how it worked for others before buying, so thank you for letting us know about these things EDIT: Oh, I just saw the morph sets on Content Paradise, apparently they're sold separately. I m curious if there are any improvement in Face Room?

sixus1 ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 12:45 AM

As far as I know the figures have face morphs. Did you expand the morph group on the head ??? --Rebekah--

Farside ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 12:48 AM

it looks like CL might be doing with Jessi and James what Daz does with V3 and M3... give the base characters for free and have morph packs for sale. There are face morph sets for sale at RDNA for the new characters.

"p6 is more like a toy..no real usefull improvments other than opengl"

I disagree, but to each his own. I think there are some significant improvements depending on what your needs are. For instance, point lights were one of the most asked for features, and they work well. The ability to make lights "diffuse only" or "specular only" is a very useful feature (maybe because I was used to being able to do it in 3dsmax), but you can really customize lighting more in your scenes now.

The "shadow catcher" is EXTREMELY useful for anyone who has any interest at all in compositing 3D with "live action" or still photos. Not to mention the ability to render a seperate shadow pass, which again is very useful for compositing in both stills and animation.

"8. Ambient occlusion... takes for ever and the shadows it creates leave funny artifacts. No where near as good as Vue.."

Have you played with the Ambient Occlusion strenth and AO scene options? Turning down the strength value, boosting samples, and reducing max distance helped clean up most of the problems with artifacts in my test renders.

yes, and that is an okay plan with me. Still....Colm's morphs are $19.95 (currently on sale for less) and you get 135 head morphs. Colm does not even list the morphs, let alone describe them or show them. Amazing. Renewed appreciation for EJ from 3Dream, $12.85 list for over 700 body and head morphs for Judy. ::::: Opera :::::

NomiGraphics ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 1:13 AM

Jessi has face morphs. You need to choose the head as a body part, and then expand the morphs section. If you see a plus sign, you haven't expanded the morphs. - Noel

CL isn't the company that is selling the morph packs. RDNA has some face morphs for sale, yes, but they are meant to enhance the morphs that come in the Poser 6 face room.

There ARE morphs for Jessie and James in the Face room, as well as expression morphs in the pose room.

I agree with Opera above re: Jessi's feet and lower legs, as they appear in the product shots at RDNA, are not too good... maybe this is all default stuff that can be cleaned up with talented morph makers. I also note that the default textures for J&J still have that nostril glow -- ? But I think Jessi's face is pretty and James is handsome, and the new features and improvements sound really good.

"4. Jessi.. nice face but no face morphs.. " the only morphs available from the pose room are expression morphs there are no head shaping morphs available in the pose room. 3. can't delete frames from animation main screen in p5 when in the pose room if you overwrote the total number of frames with a smaller number it would ask u if you wanted to delete frames. So if you had 30 and wanted to delete all frames and start over you would type in 1. This don't work anymore.. "p6 is more like a toy..no real usefull improvments other than opengl" disapointed maybe cause i was expecting something close to the vue 5 renderer speeds and lighting(hdri, great shadows, speed...

You can still go in the animation setup and tell it the number of frames and it will delete the ones outside the total, right? ::::: Opera :::::

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 4:54 AM

Frankly, i'd RATHER have the expression morphs in the pose room and the 'deeper' face-shaping morphs for character creation in the face room. ::::: Opera :::::

alamanos ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 6:38 AM

same thing in the animation setup.. there is no way to delete the total number of frames.. they can be increased but not reduced..

quote: "It is possible that CL had to rush P6 into marketplace for some reasons" There's a week left of this financial quarter - they prolly needed to get some $$ through the door before the next quarter - Daz is doing similar pronotional stuff through to the end of march. Poser6: what's the news on the multiple undos? (single level undo just sickens me)

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 7:21 AM

alamanos, that's a bug. Someone must have toggled it off in the code during development and they neglected to toggle it back on. ::::: Opera :::::

I'd expect that to be patched up real quick, just make sure you alert CL. Until it is fixed just be really careful. o_o
