I looked at all the top end ones and thought...hmmmmm yes some good features, but I decided on a SLIK Pro 500DX Not real pricey...but the legs will even angle back for pointing up in the sky and the quick lock system on head is good.Nice sturdy foam grips on legs. Not too heaavy, but rugged. In my opinion a very good tripod.

Yes but I guess that is always an issue with quality v price I think the main concern is how versatile it is and the weight I found the new Carbon ones were not that much lighter than the others I tried out. I would also suggest you consider a Monopod unless you need to mount the camera for landscapes or night shots I use this more often than my Manfrotto Classic for wildlife anyway I carry tape around to lash it to something solid

I wish to buy a tripod in the near future but have found too much choice in the marketplace. In particular, I have found that there are the Mercedes and BMWs of tripods - Manfrotto and Gitzo claim to be better (made out of carbon fibers etc...) than other brands and are MUCH more expensive. Is it worth getting one of these or will a common or garden variety tripod made of aluminium do me quite well? I would be grateful for any advice. Charles
