Here's the result of some playing around I did, Ecosystem is fantastic but to get real use out of it it's worth experimenting with filters etc.

A simple image of grey rectangles (ranging from black to white) allowed me to control the density, scale and colour of the tree model (yes its only ONE tree there). Where there are a high density of tree, I made them smaller & greener, and where there are less trees I made them larger & yellower. All driven by the underlying material's brightness. I had a real ball playing around with the filters, adjusting them & playing with the curves until I had something that looked pretty good.

The absolute blackest areas are driving the path texture, red bricks works well. I hid the eco terrain's black & white image by lowering it ever so slightly, allowing the grass & red brick terrain to show.

Imagine what's possible with multiple layers of materials, mixed intelligently and each having several objects to populate it. Complete auto-landscape generation ;) If you'd like to see an animation of it, try the link. Unfortunately it only seems to work with Quicktime right now, but I'll try & fix it.

Could you post an example of how you used the filters? I'm still struggling with filters/functions and appreciate examples.

Glad you mentioned using QT to play the file. Looks really impressive! I'd also like to see some examples of how you made this work. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is a very hot method! I didn't realize you could base an ecosystem on a grayscale image.

A tutorial would be fantastic. Oh! You just did one - cool!

Many thanks

czarnyrobert has a page describing use of grayscale maps and filters to control Ecosystems on his website in the Scenes -> Silent Spring section

Yep that was the site which got me to experimenting. Although he says THAT you can influence the ecosystem with greyscale maps, he doesn't say HOW you do this. My own experiment is on a much smaller scale, and with far less objects :D
