Subject: Looking for list of MaterialRoom values that can be animated

byAnton ( ) posted Wed, 20 April 2005 at 10:51 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 6:47 PM

Hi there, Before undergoing hours of experiments I wanted to ask if anyone already is aware on what can and cannot be animated in the material room. I don't mean loading an avi. What values, nodes, functions, etc can change along the timeline. Any info will save be hours of tedious trials. hehe. Thanks. Anton

Do I detect a subtle hint that this may have some connection with your new as yet undisclosed discovery?

byAnton ( ) posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 12:30 AM

Nothing specific to the material room. I just wanted to try something. Since I never played with P5, I am still getting to know the ins and outs of the material room and was wondering what could be animated.

I'd also be very curious to find out. I can't recall reading anything about this... and that's why I thought it might have been connected with a new discovery that you made.

Well I use the timeline to tweak everything from lights to morphs to poses to camea angles. I was hoping I could use the timeline to tweak settings in the material room too.

buyint ticket for this ride. I'm sure the answer must be 'all,' but what is the mechanism, one wonders.

All the animateable nodes have a key next to them in the material room. Create a node, then click on the key and turn animation on. That node is then animatable in the normal way. I've had some fun animiating blender nodes to create flooding effects.

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 2:10 AM

As far as I can tell almost everything in the Material room in Poser5 is animatable, so the same "should" be true of Poser6. By the way, good to see you back Anton :D

Hey Thanks, I used to love the shader tree in Raydream. It was quite elegant, and really not so different than the general idea of the material room. So I have been wanting to get back into layered effects like you would do in postwork. The material room is alot like Photoshop layers. Animating will save me alot of time in experimenting.

Attached Link: Thread (See post 5 for animated shader download)

You might be interested in post 5 of the linked thread. If you search the forum you should find a few threads on animated shaders. I know I've participated in a few.

Thanks. I have been up all night sick from bad chicken. ack. :) Ihave been rolling through threads catching up on a year's worth of info and stuff. Fun Fun stuff. Thanks for the link. Funny I saw those little keys but never thought to ask what they were there for. hehe

The ajax's slime shader might be a fun one to tinker with, animating it "growing" up vertically.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

Ajax ( ) posted Thu, 21 April 2005 at 3:46 PM

Yeah, I've always meant to try that. Only one parameter you need to animate as well. Now I think of it, Anton, if you're trying to fast track your understanding of shaders, you might want to download my shader pack from my free stuff. That has a lot of different types of shaders you can look at and a few notes on how they relate to render settings etc.

Hmm actually it might be better to do the reverse wih the slim shader.. have it start out "high" and then reduce it's height, simulating "running down". BTW, great to see you posting again,. Anton!

Hey thanks for the offer. I don't like to look at people's settings. I have a quirt about insisting I figure things out myself. Thanks for the offer though. If I get really stuck I might take you up on your offer. Thanks Ajax

Yes, I can understand that quirk. There are some things where the core principles are always the same though (like reflection and refraction). If you do change your mind, remember that the set is public domain and I've always hoped to see people post variants or derivatives of the shaders in it.

Hey Ajax. Cann a Pz3 be erc'd? I have thought about it for awhile, but the 6 format is different. The idea is to hack the pz3, erc values, and parameters, load it and have it stay intact. My goal is to erc the parts of the material room

AFAIK, ERC won't work on material values, but I could be wrong. The code for shaders doesn't look like it would work with ERC, so I've never tried it. I haven't tried pz3s, but I assume anything you can do in a cr2 could also be done in a pz3. I know you can use ERC on light parameters or pretty much anything else that has a parameter dial. I usually work with F node in preference to using keyframe animation of materials (because keyframe animation isn't saved to the library when you save a material) so I haven't looked at what happens to the code in a keyframe animated material saved in a pz3. If there is anything resembling a parameter dial in the keyframe setup, then maybe ERC will work. My gut feeling is not.

What's up? I AM bookmarking mat room threads. lol Earier to find them later. I had P5 but spent the last year on my house. Got some catching up to do.

Good luck.. I've been following it since people began posting mat tips n tricks, and there is a lot of material to go over. Make sure you search here for ajax's slime shader, and RDNA remains the current best resource for information.

You you can use the same searchterm: AKmaterialroombookmark in the P6 forum there too. I haven't searched super deep yet though.
