Subject: Problem with making dynamic clothing prop work...

vrahz ( ) posted Fri, 22 April 2005 at 8:54 AM · edited Sun, 29 December 2024 at 9:05 AM

I've made alterations on an existing dynamic clothing prop in 3DMAX and when i re-import it to poser its impossible to get the draping going. The bugger just sits there and does absolute nothing. Ive exported it using the 3ds export option and ive tried to import it both as a .obj and a .3ds... Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i might have forgotten ?? Please... the survival of my computer is at stake here ;-)

Didn't really give us much to go on .... What alterations, exactly, did you make? Increasing the mesh's polycount significantly, for instance, might bog down Poser. Or if any part of the clothing prop now intersects the figure before the cloth sim begins, that can cause problems.

"Didn't really give us much to go on ...." ... my bad :-), was kinda angry when i wrote the post lol In Poser 5 ive take a dynamic clothing prop (a pyjama) which had an open front and i closed the front to make it a sailor-like clothing prop. The poly count has not increased significantly. When i try to drape it, it does not move at all. I mean it doesnt look like Poser is even trying ;-), which made me suspect that i have somehow screwed up the import or made some mess with the prop. Does it make a diff if it is imported/exported as a .3ds? I dont seem to remember it being vital that i put it in a specific folder...? Does it have to be parented to a specific part of the figure on which it is to be draped? Thx for the reply anyways :-)

No, that shouldn't have any impact, as far as I know.

I dont seem to remember it being vital that i put it in a specific folder...?

Again, no ... that isn't important. For convenience, you can save the prop to the Library for later use. Then you wouldn't have to deal with importing again.

Does it have to be parented to a specific part of the figure on which it is to be draped?

I'm not really sure. I've actually done sims on stuff that hasn't been parented at all, but I find it's usually best to parent the item to the figure's chest or hip, in case you have to move the figure around.

None of that will probably be of any help to you, unfortunately. Were you able to successfully clothify the original, unmodified prop?

If you send me/upload the object, I can take a look at it.

"None of that will probably be of any help to you, unfortunately. Were you able to successfully clothify the original, unmodified prop?" Yes i was... was my first thought too =) Are there circumstances under which i can lock the prop by accident ? After ive imported it and aligned it it seems to be unmoveable even by normal translation. This seems to occur when i switch from the Pose room to the Cloth room and back...? Also when i try to drape it it seems locked and the draping sequence status bar is moving from frame to frame until it reaches its far right and then stops, even tho Poser continues to spit out numbers in the main window.

Some things to double-check that MAY help you... 1. make sure the IK on your figure is turned off before setting up your cloth sim. 2. Before importing and parenting the object to clothify, make sure you've zeroed your figure. 3. Make sure the object to clothify is parented to the figure's hip. 4. Pose after doing all this and after setting up the simulation, but before running the drape/dynamics sims.

Make sure your object doesn't intersect itself anywhere - a possibility if you've closed the front up. The cloth room doesn't like that any more than it likes cloth intersecting the body (which is not at all).

Are you sure 3DMax hasn't made the object's polygons "double sided"? If it has, that would be the source of your problem. -SMT

I'd rather stay in my lane than lay in my stain!

"Make sure your object doesn't intersect itself anywhere..." It did... problem solved :-) Thank you all very much for good, sound and constructive advice. Was much needed and very appreciated :-)
