The librarian stole my pen!

I went up to the counter and put my stuff down.

The librarian looked at me, with this far-away look, and suddenly spoke(right thru me),"...King Rat, starring Frank Sinatra!!!"

After a long pause - "Ahem, George Segal, maybe??", said I, not very sure as to why I even responded.

No response.
I reached for my pen and it was suddenly gone.

"I had that pen for a long time??", I thought to myself.

One of my girlfriends had given it to me. It was a Pentel Superball, in black.
She gave it to me because she said it reminded her of me.
"I always have a great time when I'm with you", I remember her saying.

Now, it was gone.

"Superball-In Black, by Pentel", I quietly uttered, as I grabbed my stuff and walked out.

Out on the sidewalk, with every step that I took, I kept thinking, "...did I put it on the counter,
did I put it on the counter???"

Oh well, may that pen come to realize its full potential.

D

Now this one I like. I like characters that give you that sense that they may be a little off. He seems to have that neurotic edginess to him before he shrugs it off. Nice.

For me piece is not about the writer. The pen drew me in. It's history and significance to the writer gives it life and demension. One wants to think the pen has reached it's potential here and has gone off to another adventure.
