The rainbow this morning created an illusion of rainbow bands as it was so intense a mirror/reflection affect occured. First I have seen this and I was lucky to catch it.

I hope this is still in theme being a refractionary process with reflections, otherwise, if not, can I remove this entry?

Very nice!

Just FYI: There's always a second inverted rainbow present (theory suggest even more bows). It's just that this second rainbow is much fainter that's why you don't always notice it. Nice vibrant colors!

3d guy, Very true. I almost always see the second rainbow which was also present during this one this morning though it was much higher and out of view of this shot. I managed to capture both in video format. Though never before have I seen banding like this one, just lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Thanks for your comments

this is super looking a very few times I saw three at on time. but this one is very bright looking

what you see is not what you know; it in your face

There's an interesting story behind rainbows; it's very compliacted but inner rainbow and (fainter) outer rainbow are the best know. Intense rainbows show also little refractions inside the inner rainbow. Notice the inner part of the rainbow is much lighter than the outer part (that light is, in fact, concentrated in the refracted light of the rainbow itself)! Excellent work!

Oh yes!! Impressive capture indeed!! Awesome colors!! Fabulous entry!

Minbari ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 2:49 AM

Interesting to know jcv2. I guess this is why the outer rim of the rainbow is the most intense part as the inner reflections traverse through each other to the outer rim? When I 1st look at the image I see more rainbows than can be seen a few seconds later as the brain tryes to null them out thinking it is a banding/strobe affect.

jcv2 ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 9:19 AM

The brightness of the different colors depends also from the composition of the light. When the sun is low above the horizon there is relatively more red in it likewise you can see in Rainbow 1 and Rainbow 2, and when the sun is high there's relatively more blue in it. And it depends of the state of the atmosphere. The little bands at the inner side of the rainbow (violet and beyond) are difficult to be explained (but perfectly showed in this shot). Even now there are riddles that are not entirely solved....
