Subject: Backgrounds in Poser... revisited

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 19 May 2005 at 6:56 PM · edited Mon, 05 August 2024 at 3:39 AM

I'm hopeless! LOL I just can't do backgrounds inside Poser. I get them in, but they look blown up and distorted and I can't move them around, or delete them either, so I have to delete the whole thing and start all over again. Can someone please direct me to a tutorial on working with backgrounds inside Poser, and how to add stuff to the backgrounds inside Poser? Also, can someone go through that background on a cube thing again? LOL, sorry for being so dense with this, but I'm really trying, but am slow when it comes to some aspects...but I will get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehe

Dr. Geep has one in his limitless collection. It's where I got my start with them. The trick is to consider what you want beforehand. I've had pretty good luck by making the background picture larger than the Poser window. That way, nothing gets distorted.
Another tip is to look at the background pic, and figure out where the light is coming from, what color, how strong, etc. Once you pull it in, set the lights in Poser to match it as closely as possible, and you're on your way..but do check the Dr. Geep tutorial.

Geep has a tutorial about backgrounds in Poser. I've seen it a couple of months ago. You can delete a background by using Display->Clear Background Picture. The main problem with background picures is shadows. They don't receive shadows. It's easy to recognize a Poser image using a background: if the feet are cropped off and the character does not cast a shadow, it's a "render over background picture" Poser 6 has a Shadow Catcher option which is very useful to get shadows onto backgrounds. Blown up and distorted, yes, I have those problems too when using a background image. So I don't use background images anymore. Instead of a background image, I load a one-sided square, use the background image as a texture map on the square, and then I move and resize the square until it looks good. And for sky backgrounds, I almost always use a procedural shader on the background material. Ajax has some great background shaders in freestuff that I use quite often. Hope this helps, Steven.

Is there a place I can get a one sided square for Poser? I didn't install the full Poser because I wanted to save on hard drive space, and I wasn't using most of what came with Poser anyway. So I only installed the basic program features....and I don't think I have a "square".
