I am trying to randomly place some bushes, and maybe some grass... I did take a tree and just drive it all the way in the ground to where the leaves re just above the ground and it looked ok, but can you just make a bush? Grass?

For all my bushes I do exactly what you did ... drive trees into the ground. For grass I use a free program called Grass found at: http://www.grass3d.com

Here's a pic of mine with the techniques mentioned above. All vegetation is made from Bryce trees except the grass which is made with Grass software.

I have one fairly hi-res bush in freestuff,........do a search for "sackrat's trees" or just sackrat.
