Subject: P6: zooming in = higher memory usage??

I have an odd thing happening with a scene I'm working on in P6. I made some braces for Vicky's teeth (she needs 'em) and want to do a close-up render to see how they look. Shadows and AO on, but very moderate settings, tex filtering off etc. I have windows Task Manager open to the Performance tab so I can watch memory usage. Now if I start to render a whole head-and torso shot I see the page file usage climb to about 500MB, then the render begins. CPU usage sits at 100%. Render completes ok. But if I zoom in really close to frame just her mouth and hit the render button, the page file rockets up to 1.8GB (I only have 1GB of RAM) and the CPU usage sits at around 5% with LOTS of HD activity obviously. And not much rendering activity. I'm puzzled as to how zooming closer can cause that. I'd have thought there'd be less in the scene and it should be easier to render, not harder.
