Subject: Any way to do away with Poser 4 main characters?

YngPhoenix ( ) posted Sun, 03 July 2005 at 12:49 AM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 10:09 PM

I have V3,M3 and Aiko 3 along with all of their morphs and a huge amount of Pose files. It seems to be alot for my 2.2 GHz computer to handle and slows it down some. So is it possible to delete all of the P4 male and female characters and only use V3,M3 and A3, or will it mess up the program. I would like to be able to start the program up without having to try and sort through all of the tedious files normally used with the P4 default characters.

You can delete the P4 characters no problem - it won't mess up Poser. I would also recommend multiple runtimes - that way Poser only has to deal with a limited number of files at a time, but you can easily switch runtimes on the fly.

Not to be critical, but why not just use DAZ|Studio? It is a "leaner" competitor of Poser, without all the extraneous P2,3,and Poser4 characters. Since you are using primarily DAZ characters, I think that DAZ|Studio would be a better choice, since DAZ's installers install in Studio a lot better than Poser 4,5 and 6. -The Starkdog

"why not just use DAZ|Studio? It is a "leaner" competitor of Poser, without all the extraneous P2,3,and Poser4 characters." How about 'Because it's also considerably leaner in features and ability'?

YngPhoenix, You can get rid of everything in your library....I did. The only original content I have in my Poser4 (ProPack) is the needed Geometry files for the lights, camera and deformers (magnets) and the texture for the floor. Everything else (lights, poses, characters, etc.) are only what Ive added and use. My face library is reserved for all the inj/rem files, which keeps them from cluttering the pose library. SWAMP

I wouldnt recommend daz studio to anyone at the moment as morphy said it is not even as good as propack. It is still very slow and buggy and the interface is very different to poser and I find it quite hard to use. If you have wardrobe wizard then deleting the p4 files might not be such a good idea. You could keep the clothes and one male and one female nude figure to use with the wardrobe wizard. I still use the poser 4 figures so this isnt an issue for me.

You guys seem to be missing the point. Why pay $200-300 for Poser, and then strip out 2/3 of the content, when DAZ|Studio is FREE, and DAZ Characters work perfectly fine in DAZ|Studio? True, D|S does not support Python Scripting, dynamic hair and clothes YET; but I assume it will soon. It also depends on what YngPheonix is trying to accomplish- still renders or animation? I'm just trying to show some viable options. -The Starkdog

I would say to download daz studio and try it but don`t expect it to be a replacement for poser at least till the bugs are fixed and the speed is improved.

Stripping out all the P4 characters and stuff is like taking off the hubcaps to lighten the truck. A fully loaded P4 character (hair, props and clothes) fully morphed up rarely exceeds 20MB while a counter part M3/V3 type exceeds 100! I regularly use P4 characters, clothed, at under 10MB as supporting cast.

DAZ|Studio is a nice program, but it's still in Beta. You never know what new features will be introduced, or whether the next version will work at all. If you want the ability to do consistent, dependable work, right now Poser is the only choice. When DAZ|Studio finally reaches the official Version 1.0, the story will be different.

If you have Poser 5 look at creating another runtime or use the existing DOWNLOAD runtime to store extra figures. If multiple runtimes are not an option you can just copy the figure (cr2) to another folder. That way you can easily restore it later.

I don't think deleting the P4 characters will make much diffrence to the speed at which Poser loads. What you should do if you have not done already, delete the default character from the default document (preferredState.pz3), then set your prefered state.

WOW! I didn't expect to get so many responses so soon! Thanks for all of the replies, they give me enough info to consider. I haven't tried D/S yet due to all the talk about it being buggy and somewhat limited in its' use. I will probably consider it once it comes out of beta though. I was just one of the many to start downloading everything they could get their hands on once they got Poser 4 so my file lists became huge. Also since most of the newer stuff uses more inj. instead of morphs my Pose files are a mess. I've tried to adjust and move them but then I get the dreaded" unable to locate " messages when I try to implement them. So I will try your suggestions and keep the one that works best with my system. Thanks again for all of your replies.

There are many ways you can do away with Poser 4 main characters. Strangling, shooting, stabbing and drowning are only a few. My favorite method is tying them to the railroad tracks and waiting for the afternoon express to run them over. Barring that, tying them to a log and turning on the buzzsaw is always good in a pinch. And the best part is, you won't get arrested or tried for murder. Kate the Ever Helpful

Yngphoenix I would suggest cleaning up your runtime by getting rid of files that you don`t use much etc, that could get rid of a lot more than just deleting the poser 4 characters. My runtime was almost 4 gigabytes recently so I just deleted it all (not recommended). ;)
