Subject: Reflective floor in P6

I still can't make it happen. Does the type of lighting come into play? Can someone walk me through this simple yet puzzling concept for me? Please don't just refer me to a previous post. Thanks.

Not sure I know enough to help, but if nobody else comes along, I'm willing to try. What's going wrong? I've been using all sorts of reflective stuff in P6, including working mirrors, and getting great results just by clicking the 'add reflection' wacro.

Well, I am trying to get the floor to reflect. I have tried using "add reflect" and unchecked the "shadow only" box in the material room for the floor. I am using the road and sky P6 lighting, and cannot get a reflection.

Go to the material room, advanced mode; Select the GROUND props and unselect "Shadow Catch Only" Plug a "reflect" node in the reflection color of the PoserSurface. The reflect node is found when you right click, in the Raytrace submenu. Befor rendering, be sure that raytracing is enabled. By the way, it will be much much easier to find a reflective material (some comes directly woth Poser6) and try them. That's the basic... Here is a tutorial for Poser5, but works exactly the same in Poser6.

The biggest problem is the "Shadow Catch Only" (bottom of the main material node). The ground will only receive the shadows... Just uncheck it and it will work...

morphious ( ) posted Tue, 12 July 2005 at 7:21 AM

Yes, I have tried this, and still no reflection. I am wondering if the lighting is the problem. Are there light sets in P6 that hinder the reflection from the floor?

semidieu ( ) posted Tue, 12 July 2005 at 7:48 AM

Could you post a screenshot of your material and render settings ?

morphious ( ) posted Tue, 12 July 2005 at 7:53 AM

I just tried a different light set, and now there's reflection. Wonder why the IBL lighting won't allow a reflection from the floor?

morphious ( ) posted Tue, 12 July 2005 at 7:59 AM

Anyone know?

morphious ( ) posted Tue, 12 July 2005 at 9:24 AM

I now see that with AO enabled in the lighting make the reflection from the floor vanish. Anyone know why?

Fazzel ( ) posted Tue, 12 July 2005 at 9:47 AM

AO depends on raytracing to work. Reflections depend on raytracing to work. They are probably interfering with each other and AO is over riding reflections.

Another odd thing. If I have an infinite light, and add another light, the second light must be a spot in order for the reflection from the floor to show up. Anyone have lighting tips or configurations when using a reflective floor? Thanks for your help everyone.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Tue, 12 July 2005 at 12:11 PM

Dunno about AO but I can assure you that you can have lots of either Infinite or Spot lights, or any combination thereof and reflections will work just fine. The only other thing I can think of is that your material settings for the floor are wrong and you're washing out the reflections. As mentioned above, please post a pic of the settings you are using for the floor. Otherwise, it's impossible to tell what the problem is.

OK, here's the material room. I am using the P6 IBL Ambiant Occlusion light set. No reflection. If I delete the lights, and create just a single infinite light, the reflection appears.

Turn down the diffuse value, to 0.1 or similar. Your current material has regular diffuse reflection and mirror reflection and is therefore reflecting more light than it receives - something we can do within freedom of computer generated images, but that doesn't happen in real life. You may in addition want to try unchecking "Reflection_Lite_Mult".

I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

That's a weird looking Reflect node for P6. Where's Ray_Bias?

Is this a mac or something? It does look different. Not that it should matter, but it looks strange

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Yes, it's a MAC. By turning off Reflect_Lite_Mult, did the trick. Now I have to much reflection, but I can adjust. Thanks for everyones help. I appreciate it.
