My biggest problem with Poser (and other 3D applications) revolves around the large amount of time required to actually do anything with them.
3D can distract from real world issues......much like an obssession with PC games can. Or watching too much TV. Or........becoming too obsessed with any hobby or form of entertainment.
Personal discipline is what's needed.
Too bad that personal discipline isn't sold here in the marketplace.
If anyone can find some personal discipline laying around anywhere, then please share. Perhaps you could post it in Freestuff.
Funny you should say that xeno 'cause I'm forcing myself to finish a laborious fly-through animation just for the self-discipline factor. I already know that the end result will have flaws, and it's been hard not to abandon the thing and move on to the latest spurious inspiration, but I've learned so much by sticking to the project. Next time, I'll have that knowledge and will avoid the errors. (For example, when animating a camera, less is more, LOL.) I must say, though, that producing something via the 3D hobby is in my opinion healthier and more rewarding than playing PC games and watching TV. You're using your brain more actively and at a more natural pace. Balance in all things is key of course, but with artistic pursuits, at least the time spent is creative as opposed to passive. At best, you can share your creations for the pleasure of others as well as yourself. Isn't discipline in the Freestuff area a violation of site TOS? Or is it merely images of discipline? ;-)
I agree with you about 3D being a more productive pursuit vs. PC games (a former obsession of mine), or watching too much TV (not one of my vices). Because, as you point out so well -- it forces you to use your brain in an interactive way.
You've stated the positive side of the case very, very precisely. And I agree with you completely.
But 3D does carry with it the possibility of becoming an unhealthy addiction -- just like most anything can.

Speaking of watching complete junk on TV......combined with images of discipline........
About a week ago, I saw an old Elvis movie -- Blue Hawaii. It's one of those truly bad Elvis movies: and it's worth watching just for that reason.
In one scene, the (then) 20-something Elvis chases down a misbehaving 17-year-old girl on a beach, catches her, and then proceeds to give her an enthusiastic spanking.
She was a high school girl that was a member of his tour group, you see......so naturally, a vital part of his job as the tour guide involved correcting the young lady's bad behavior.
That sort of "personal discipline" worked in 1961, I suppose........but if any 20-something man did such a thing to a 17-year-old girl nowadays: he'd be the one in trouble, I think..........
.......for violating the TOS.
The old movies aren't politically correct. That fact alone makes them worth seeing.
