THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Poser to Bryce 5 CRASH!

bandolin ( ) posted Wed, 03 August 2005 at 10:21 AM · edited Fri, 16 August 2024 at 4:28 AM

I can't import Don or Judy into Bryce 5. Once the .obj has imported a dialog box asks to locate the textures (ie: DonBodyTexLo.jpg). I locate the appropriate file and Bryce just blows away. I've tried resaving the .jpg to different locations, with the same result. The only way to import Poser figures is to cancel all textures when Bryce asks for them. But then there's no way to map their textures in the texture editor, w/o spending hours trying to do so. Has anyone else had this problem?

hmm..not really, but I only have Poser 4. Try one of the more 'primitive' figures (there should be some older Poser figures in characters, or there are in my version). Also stop by the Poser forum, there should be more experts in there..

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

I didn't post this in the Poser forum, 'cause I didn't think there'd be too many Bryce users there. But, I'll post it there anyway. I noticed this only happens with Poser Figures. DAZ figures import no problem.

This is a Poser and Bryce bug. Poser doesn't write the complete path to the texture files (that's the error msg cause Bryce can't find it) but Bryce has a bug with manual assignment. A great way to get .OBJ's into any version of Bryce is with the free Grouper app (link).

Hmm... if this is a documented bug, it must have been fixed in the later release versions of Bryce (perhaps when DAZ got it). I don't have this error at all; in fact, I've never had any difficulty whatsoever getting any imported file into Bryce. Odd.

Thanks Dan, that explains alot. I find it incredibly odd that more people haven't reported this. Sadly, Grouper is a PC only app. I'm on a Mac. :(

Yes, I should have mentioned this was a 5.0.1 problem - for me this problem was fixed in 5.5.
Sorry Bandolin, I do now recall you're a Mac user. One way that I can think of for you to get this is to copy all the image textures to the same folder as the .OBJ.
The easiest way would be using the stand-alone version of Mac Daz|Studio. Save your figure from Poser as a .PZ3 file and load that into D|S and export to .OBJ. D|S will copy all the needed textures into the folder with the .OBJ.
Unfortunately, the current version of Mac D|S doesn't handle Trans maps correctly but I just got notice that this is fixed in the next release.

Thanks Dan. I was about to ask if D|S would solve the problem. I'll give it a go in the morning.

I ALWAYS copy my textures to the folder where my exported obj resides. I only have Poser 4 PP though.

Yep Upgrade to 5.5 and it comes with DS and you can Upgrade the Installation of DS and you will be blown away with the Ease of useing Bryce and DS together... You can Mak all of your Poser scene and Save a s a Poser file and then Import into DS and then Into Bryce with EVERYTHING there... At Siggraph I was useing a P4 with a 128MB video Card and 1 gig of Ram and I was going back and forth between the 2 Programs in seconds..I mean I was demostarting going Back and forth 5-6 timeas and more just t0o Pose My Characters... So Fast that even Poser6 and you can't do that... I say just Upgrade and get it over with...Got a student ID Number...Its $59...Got a Serial Number of a Previous Version of Bryce...$79...New just $99 and you get a Program that will in the Next Year or so will be able to Bring you EVERYTHING Poser has...PLUS More... ....... Oh and RC_1 of DazStudio was released on the website of DAZ just a couple of Days ago and I also heard that an SDK will be released to the folks who want to Develope Plugins for DS...I think I heard that there are already Several Plugins already being Made...But then again I might be wrong...Nope dopnt think so.........

Bless you Brian and if Bandolin was using a PC I'd agree but DAZ has really let the Mac version slide. I'm finding 5.5C almost impossible to use with DAZ|Studio. I've been reporting 5.5 bugs and getting zero response. So I've given up on that. I am very much looking forward to the D|S SDK, which is looking really good on the Mac. Hope you enjoyed Siggraph! Best; Dan

Thanks Dan I did... No wonder Tile Nut was PO about the Mac builds and all...

dan whiteside ( ) posted Sat, 06 August 2005 at 12:11 PM

Sorry Brian - You've been a great asset to Bryce and DAZ has been damn lucky to have you. Didn't mean to shoot the messenger ;-) I just get really frustrated that I spent almost a year of my spare time testing 5.5 Mac only to have it not work well for me. Sometimes it just spills out! Best; Dan

foleypro ( ) posted Sat, 06 August 2005 at 12:36 PM

Its fine Sir... I am a PC user and Not a Mac user... Cant everybody who wants to Play in Bryce just use an older Version of a Mac OS...?

dan whiteside ( ) posted Sat, 06 August 2005 at 1:27 PM

'fraid not - I'm using both old and new OS versions. I was hoping that the newest (10.4.2) would help but I'm still having the same problems.

foleypro ( ) posted Sun, 07 August 2005 at 12:52 AM

But during the Betatest cycle evrything worked to an extent right...?

dan whiteside ( ) posted Sun, 07 August 2005 at 7:27 AM

Yup, it only happens in the release version. Never happened during the beta.

foleypro ( ) posted Sun, 07 August 2005 at 9:42 AM

Have you called Josh or Chad...? Maybe a Total Re-write Needs to be done for the Builds... Everybody knows how hard it is to Programm for the Mac and that it would take alot of time AND money to do which that could run into the Millions... Does DAZ have this Kinda money...? But if a Few Mac Programmers stepped up and said "HEY I will help Re-write Bryce for a Percentage" then I could definitely see Bryce Living Very Far into the future.... Ok I am dreaming...Because it would be nice to get a total Re-build...For the PC and Mac...
