Subject: Creating a horses tail with strand hair.

Hi, I'm trying to create a horses tail using Poser 6. I'm having a problem trying to form the guide hairs into a smooth flowing curve. Also how do deformers work in this context. I'm trying to creat something similar to Jolly hipony strand hair (the ponytail part, obviously). Are there any special techniques that allows the hair to follow a particular shape? I've tried Dr geeps tutorials, but this seems more advanced. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Have you tried making some hair brushes and painting the tail in a graphic program? To me that would seem the easiest way, plus I think that you would get a more natural flowing, whispy look to it. I'm not all that great with Poser, and have only ventured into the hair room a couple of times. The only thing I've successfully made in the hair room is a really hideous looking Mohawk style, LOL

Dynamic hair works great for horse tails. That is one of the first things I did with it. A lot easier than making a human hairstyle.

StudioVerite used to have a great tutorial on dynamic hair, but the site seems to have gone down. There are pretty good tutorials here:

They don't cover styling as well as the StudioVerite one did, though. Use the styling controls, and you should be able to shape the hair into long, smooth curves pretty easily.

Acadia, how would you use this technique for animations? It would seem to be a lot of work to do dozens of frames that way. To me using the hair room seems a lot easier, because then you can animate the hair and even use wind force to blow it around.

If you have the Jolly strand hair - Jessi Hipony the parts of the hair which are not required can be hidden leaving only the pony tail section, this can be positioned and parented to the horses rear end for a great looking dynamic horsetail!

Alternatively you could just conform the hairstyle to Jessi's head, and stick her head up the horses arse! LOL

More seriously, if you wish to begin from scratch - Start with a low number of 'verts per hair' when styling, and then increase when you are happy with the general shape. This is one of the best methods for styling.
