Wooden clinker built sailing boats.

This place is Wivenhoe, there was until about 20yrs ago a shipyard building such vessels here but now it has been gentrified and all the old ship building yards away to the left of this photograph are modern apartments for those that can afford them. Gone too are all the fishing boats that have been harvesting oysters here since before Romans times. Ironically the gentrification changes what the people came for originally.

And every one said, 'If we only live,
We too will go to sea in a Sieve,---
To the hills of the Chankly Bore!'
Far and few, far and few, Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue, And they went to sea in a Sieve.

it's a beautiful image, Richard, but your commentary leaves me feeling sad. it's the same way around here...strip away the people's ability to earn an income, destroy heritages and habitats...all for what? more and more buildings & businesses to cater to the rich. anything to make a buck. well, that's life i guess. but i sure do love your picture.

Oh dear now I don't know if I left you feeling sad or nostalgic - but at least it worked on some level :)

Lovely words Rich, it makes me angry coz many of us will never beable to afford these places and the industry that might have provided someone with the finances to afford one is gone, it's the same all over the world the rich get richer and the poor get poorer!

There has been many times I have refused doing a renovation on something heritage when asked to renew to modern standards. I do not want to be the one destroying what was once long ago. Good challenge image.
