A nice site for gaining ideas but the models do not load directly into Poser (or usual 3D programs). Does anything convert these models into something usable?

They offer free Design Workshop Lite. You can load the model in it and export to DXF. http://www.artifice.com/free/dw_lite.html Poser and Bryce can import a DXF file.

My recollection is that the DXF export is rather poor, and when I contacted the site owners, they were seriously unhappy about their models being rendered in Poser or Bryce.

IIRC, they are in 3dmf format which the then 3D Exploration could read pretty well. There may be some freeware cpnverters that will read them also. Didn't know about their objections to using other applications - 'course they better out that in their EULA. Even the few "detailed" models they have don't look that earthshaking to me. They're OK especially for scene fillers but unless it's something specific they have, you can find as good or better free buildings on the 'net in more Poser friendly formats.

"You'd think they'd be happy to see the buildings being productively used." It's a money thing I imagine. The only thing they seem to sell is their CAD software. The models are essentially an enticement that they hope will get people into 'Design Workshop.' 3dmf isn't AFAIK a traditional CAD forman and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't chosen to increase the likelihood that people would download the software. With some effort, you may be able to use the buildings in other software but I can understand their not being thrilled about it. E-Frontier probably wouldn't be overjoyed if you download their free models and then render them in Max without buying Poser. They may or may not say it's fine with them but you gotta figure they'd be happier if you bought their product.
