Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 26 1:43 pm)
Thank you for the link, but I am not really convinced. There is only one render of the Shark, and no close-up. The mouth/teeth from afar does not look too good. Of course with 4196 poly and for $15 it is good, but I would prefer to pay more to have a more realistic shark. Maybe I am wrong, so I would appreciate comments from users who have bought this product.
Perfectly understandable.
robert.sharkey had a Great White Shark freebie available at one time. Higher resolution, but I haven't used it myself and can't tell you how realistic it might be.

Great White Shark in Lightwave format. Not on-topic, but in surfing to some 3D sites lately, I'm always amazed by how unrealistic Poser renders look compared to Lightwave renders, even in cases where they were probably trying their best to wrestle Firefly into submission, and especially in cases where they are rendering human models. However, I'm guessing that Lightwave, like Carrara and other real rendering/modelling apps, have some bone/IK system that allows posing. With a shark, all you really need is a morphing bend deformer on the body, and something to morph the mouth and pectoral fins, because these sharks don't have alot of bending or twisting motions.
DAZ not only has a Great White, but they have a very good texture for it as an additional purchase. I have both the shark and the more realistic texture and have done some animations with it and it's very lifelike. If you've only looked at the shark, you should definitley check out the additional textures.
Not on-topic, but in surfing to some 3D sites lately, I'm always amazed by the fact that there always seems to be someone who steps in and begins knocking Poser and it's Firefly and human characters. However, I'm guessing that because they always use the comparision of Lightwave, Carrara and other real rendering/modelling apps that cost thousands of dollars more that they just don't get it. And no, I haven't seen any sharks for Poser that look realistic to me either.
Carrara is not that expensive, like $99 or whatever to upgrade (I don't recall the exact price). But I agree - I would be disappointed if they decided to bring Poser's rendering speed and realism up to that of Lightwave or Carrara, since they might use that as a reason to jack the price way up. I have been an adherent, for many years now, of maintaining Larry Weinberg's original idea, i.e. Poser as a posing tool and artists' aid, to keep the cost and complexity down. If we want a top-notch render, we can always export the figure to a rendering app, once it's posed. The charm of Poser is that it's very easy for anyone to learn the techniques of posing a figure and doing quick test renders, assuming they have a stable installation and aren't having memory problems that force them to shut down and restart periodically. When they added the materials room and shader nodes, this made it rather complex and alot harder for 3D newbies to learn, and diverged significantly from Weinberg's intent in my opinion. Now it's more of a shader geek's tool than something an artist with no prior 3D experience can easily master.
Personally, I think the Firefly render engine can do some really impressive things, almost comparable to "real" or "high-end" apps, if the user knows what they are doing and takes their time in the materials room and with the lights. I have Lightwave and Maya, and absolutely NO clue what the hell I'm doing with them. I literally go cross-eyed and start drooling uncontrollably when I fire them up, which is why I like Poser.I am trying to learn them using tutorials online and Gnomon's DVD's, but it is a nasty uphill battle. I started with Poser 4 and muddled through it, which made 5 and 6 a reasonably short learning curve, mainly due to Poser's user friendly interface. Knock Poser all you like, but I consider it a stepping stone to professional apps like the aformentioned. As for the Daz shark, it is limited and somewhat low-res, especially around the eyes, whick look like stop signs to me, but unless you are ANIMATING close-ups, a little cleanup in Photoshop or Paintshop Pro should alleviate any low-res woes I would think. If you ARE animating, try using the motion blur feature. It has a tendency to hide a lot of polygonal edges. Just my 2 cents:)

Is there somewhere a realistic poseable white shark ? I have the one from Daz but it is not good enough for close-ups. Any idea ? Thanks
