Which version of Vue?? The Esprit lineup has terrain resolution import limitations that were removed for the Professional/Infinate lineup. It's not as much a question of size of file as resolution in that instance (2048 x 2048 I believe is the Esprit limit). Beyond that I'm not sure, I've never had any problems other than that (and the mars data has some strange things going on with it but that's a whole 'nother issue.

It's also possible that it doesn't recognize the "DEM" format. Unfortunately, there are LOTS of "DEMS" that will only be recognized by specific programs- like VistaPro, or MicroDem, etc. Vue's importer only recognizes USGS Ascii DEM's. What you may need to do is download one of the free DEM readers and converters like 3DEM, MicroDEM or Wilbur and see if they read it. MicroDEM reads the most "DEMS" (and writes it's own "DEM" format) but will also write out a USGS "DEM". Of course, another problem could BE that the DEM is too big, as 70MB sounds pretty big for importing. You might also want to check out the thread lower down on "MEGA Terrains and Terragen TER files in Vue"- as you can also import DEMs in much bigger sizes- like 4097 x 4097 from higher rez 10 meter data using a BITMAP import. The thread explains that process. One other thought too- 10 meter USGS DEMs usually run around 10 MB each. BUT- you can download a SEAMLESS chunk of an area- like the Grand Canyon, and that could be 7 to 10 DEMS (or more, depending on how much of the Grand Canyon you want) and so 70 MB might be such a chunk of data that has been saved in a DEM format. Even in USGS format, I doubt Vue would open it even in the correct DEM format. I think converting it to a BITMAP at 4097 x 4097 is your best way of using this data.

Perhaps someone could help me out here... I've imported several DEMs into Vue without problems, but I was wondering if there is a limit to size? I've been trying too import a larger DEM (about 70 mB) and Vue says it can't read it. 30 mB worked fine so I was just curious if anyone else has had the same problem? Take care, Sabra
