Subject: Vue5 and V5I Problems Importing *.3ds file format models

Jens_T reported a problem to me after purchasing my Tokonoma Room package. Some of the models do not import correctly into her Vue 5 (or into my copy Vue5I). Some of the sub-components of the models (such as the spout on a teapot) show up as being present in the model hierarchy list, but they actually haven't imported correctly. They don't show up in Vue, and they won't render or assume material changes and so forth. I tried importing 10 or 12 models in the very latest, most standardized version of the *.3ds file format, and experienced this same kind of problem with about 20% of the models. However, when imported into Vue 4.1 and Vue.2 (or into any other application), the models are all complete and work fine. I also was able to replicate this problem with models in the *.obj file format, except that the percentage of failed imports is even higher. I dinked around for hours with V5I to see if I could convince it, in some way, to import the model correctly. No go. There is something wrong with the *.3ds file import facility in both V5 and V5I. Some of you may experience this problem, either as model-builders or as purchasers of *.3ds formatted models. The best "fix" for this is to ask the vendor or model-builder to make a "boolean union" of the sub-components that are failing - that is, to make a permanent join of the components that won't import - to one or more of the components that do import correctly. This works, even if any textures that may be applied to the varaious subcomponents are "UV mapped" in different directions. The UV mapping of the subcomponents normally is preserved in a boolean join. (Don't worry if you don't understand the last statement - just relay it to the model-builder, if you are a purchaser of a failed model.) In my case, I was able to easily re-build the models Jens_T purchased and e-mail the new V5 versions to her for use in V5 or V5I. It took just a short few minutes to make this kind of fix (for those of you who might be dealing with reluctant vendors or model-builders). So, not much work is required of the model-builder, assuming that the model is built in a professional and systematic way. If anyone has questions about this, please post here. If any of you purchased my Tokonoma Room pkg for use in V5 or V5I, please let me know. I'll quickly e-mail you the special versions of the teapot and andon for V5 or V5I.
