Subject: Help Moon

Can you help me? I've been happily taking shots of everything out here in Oman, but tonight my husband went out and took some lovely shots of the moon with his Fuji finepix S7000. We think my Cannon EOS 20D might be able to take better shots (less fuzzy in close-up) if only I could figure out what settings to use. I've tried using Av with the exposure down as far as it'll go, and I've tried putting the aperture value at 8.0, 6.3 and 10. I've tried the white balance at AWB, Cloudy and even Sunny - but all I ever get is a bright white disc. I've tried Tv, and fiddled with that... M fiddled with that... nothing nada zilch. Help???

It's a bright disc because it is overexposed. The darkness of the sky is tricking the metering mode. You should try manual mode and speed up the shutter and shrink the aperture until you get what you want.

This is what I have used. Probably best to bracket exp though as brightness could vary quite a bit depending on angle of elevation and atmospheric conditions.

I just checked that EXIF because usually it is 1/125th @ F8 @ ISO50 for a full moon (which ties in more with Dougs settings). I used focal length of 245mm equivalent which is the best I can muster. The EXIF is right, the moon was very low on the horizon at the time I think. Which shows how much brightness can vary.
EXIF was added by PSP script which seems to have a stutter :D

This might be of some to use. I have just had a discussion about theis on another forum. Doug is that a crop? Never got anythink like that close with a 300m on a 1.6 crop sensor. Got something like this with a 500mm mirror lens, not good quality though.
