Subject: How, Exactly, does the Hot 20 Work?

Darth_Logice ( ) posted Thu, 01 March 2001 at 5:20 PM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 7:23 AM

I've been monitoring this for a few days now and I can't figure it out. Seems that the images never change. What constitutes a Period? I keep thinking my stuff might crack it, getting huge hits compared to others in the same day...but it never makes it. I would like to know how it works thanks. -Darth_Logice

It is based on the number of unique member views an image has gotten in the last 7 days. Thus, one member can only generate one view in the 7 day period. The main gallery does not track unique clicks, so it's count will be higher.

Ah, I see...sort of... Um...so when does a period of seven days start and end? Or does it begin apon posting the image and you have to wait until it's seven days old to assess it's unique hits? Also, unless the poster is looking at his or her own image over and over again...probably nobody else is going back for seconds, so the numbers shouldn't be that different, should they? After seven days, images are removed from the hot 20? Or after seven days from when it was originally posted? So, feasibly, one could appear on the Hot 20 for five minutes if they went over the edge on the seventh day? Help! Each answer brings more questions

Ok, the seven day period is always today, and the previous six days. It has nothing to do with the date the image is posted. When someone looks at an image, the date they looked at it is recorded. So, the numbers will change as the days pass. If I looked at an image eight days ago, my viewing no longer is counted in the Hot 20.

Hi Darth, I've been monitoring this for a while too, and as near as I can tell, people are going back for 2nd views. I can only verify on my own stuff, but on other peoples I look at the hot20 viewsvs number of hits, and I see a large disparity in numbers. On my stuff, I view it once to make sure the image upload worked, then when I go to view a posted comment. [I don't bother browsing my galley a lot, I have the stuff on my harddrive so I can see it when ever I want to]. Based on that vs the number of views on the few pics I'v had in hot20, I can honestly say that some people must be viewing my images more than once. Pretty flattering when you think about it.

Yep, flattering indeed :) I did notice that I finally cracked the hot 20 with my last image, so I wonder how many times that's actually happened and I just wasn't aware of it? Too bad there's no notice. Hmmmm...

Hrmmmmm... No notice? Hrmmm, indeed. Hey! Officer Cook! ;]

Remember the Hot20 is calculated on the fly, so it's possible to "make it" one minute and be gone the next. I'm not sure an email would relly be meaningful. We can look into it though if it's really, really wanted.

I'm not sure the Hot 20 is really significant. So far, I haven't gotten any extra comments since being added to it, so one wonders if anyone is really looking at it? Hmmm...impossible to know the success of the hot 20 -Darth

I don't really have an opion one way or the other. It's an ego boost if I make hot20 on an image, but I don't see that it does much for an artist except increase the views on an image by raising it's visibility. I use it as a quick browse to see what's cool in the galleries on days when my browsing time is limited. I know it does feel good to have an image that I broke my tail on make the list, tho.

Yep. I guess the deal is that by the time you make the hot20, everyone that intended to see it already has. -Darth

Except for the people who only browse the Hot20, and we do have a lot of those - viewer who just hit the Hot20 for each gallry, wether through time constraints or whatever.

Is there any way to choose a "best non-sexy"? I know that different people have different tastes, but I get the impression that I never make the top ratings because I have no skill or aptitude in making sexy stuff. Indeed, of my uploads, the one with the most downloads is not a model or prop but my RSR2OBJ utility program.
