Subject: * VET does NOT support sound with Poser yet :-(

People are reporting that the character doesnt show up in the viewer on a VET enabled html page, and the sound simply wont play at all. (I experienced this today, and did some digging). Current Viewpoint technology uses the Windows Media Player to deliver sound, but "hope to add" their own audio side at some point. Major disappointment really.

I find their legal contract incredibly complicated for most users. If they expect people to really adopt this interesting technology they had better make the agreement a lot more user-friendly... I can understand big commercial sites needing a complicated legal contract, but if they are offering it to "hobbyists" like many in the Poser Community they should create something a lot more simple. After all, we are using their plug-in, not buying a house. VET is really interesting and has probably a lot of potential. But I think they aren't going about ginning-up support and usage in a very friendly way...

I glanced through the docs and did see something about integrating VET with flash files, maybe that would work for sound?

Yes Fox, it does appear a bit daunting when you look at all the legal jargon ;-) Being a developer first and foremost (theres a legal team at work who get paid to sift through all that contract stuff) I just wanna see the thing work first. Not much to ask, really. Id really love to see this problem cleared up quickly though, as I do believe theres an awful lot of potential in the VET thing, whenever it supports audio triggered by behaviours (animation sets). Im still not 100% sure who should be looking at this - CL or Viewpoint - or ideally, both. Anyone at CL reading this have any comments?

Jeff - thanks. I`ll have a butchers at that as a workaround.

I cruised over to the Viewpoint VET Forum and learned some new stuff- Ironically I got there while downloading the VRML 2.0 (free) software which also links to Viewpoint... The posts there do indicate an interest already among Pro-Pack users and that sound is "supposed to work", primarily with Windows media player... Lightwave and MAX users will be happy to know a VET plug-in is being developed for those programs too... I really do think VET is Really Interesting (the more I see it the more I like it- the SONY Cam-Corder demos are pretty amazing- tons of detail- which leads me to wonder why the Porno People haven't "jumped" on this... (Think about it- high-rez 3D animations over 56K modems- but REAL TIME using Broadband as it is MUCH FASTER than video...) Not a big Porno Fan but had to make that observation since a number of people here seem to make a living from that industry...

Click on the "3D View" to check out the CamCorder. You can zoom into great detail, do a 360 View, and see it perform some various features. If it is not already loaded, you will have to download the VET Plug-in first...

Heh-heh- I bet the first Porno Sites using VET will get Viewpoint a few million plug-in downloads in the first week-Perhaps the REAL reason why they placed it in the hands of Poser People???...

I'm afraid it will be another neato technology killed by a onerous license agreement. Why these folks like Pulse, VET, etc. don't look at, and emulate, the sucess of Flash, I have no idea. Sell the authoring environment, and release the plug-in license free. What kind of world are we coming to when an artist cannot sell their work anyway they want? What is next, licensed canvass? Licensed paint? How would we like to sign a special license every time we posted a jpeg? For me, I'm only developing in RT 3D environments that let me post my work anywhere and anyway I want (Virtools, Shout3D, ferinstance, and of course, eventually ShockWave 8.5). IMHO, all thse little 3D viewers with their complicated and expensive licenses g are going to be simply creamed when the 900 pound gorilla (finally!) gets off the pot...

I have to agree with you. VET really is a neato technology but very likely to be killed by short-sightedness and upfront greed. VET should be handled just like Flash so that it becomes almost universal- but they won't allow it... I noticed that Viewpoint STILL sells annual subscriptions to the REM Model Bank for $395 (a year) plus a fee for each model purchased- YET (heh-heh) you can BUY the entire damn REM collection in its complete total low 2 hi-rez formats for just $495 on 9 CD's from DeEspona directly. What planet do these people live on?...
