Subject: SLOOOOOOOOOOW...what's up with the site speed?

rockets ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 1:33 PM · edited Fri, 31 January 2025 at 11:54 PM

Is it just me or is it taking everyone else forever to get in here?

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

It's not a new problem is it? Always has been the same for me. Now what would have been worthy of a post is a heading like, " FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST...where has all this speed come from?" ;) Well at least it hasn't gone down completely lately... Cheers

I can't see how anyone can make much money with this slowness. It has gotten to the point that I groan if a merchant only sells at Rendo and have past things up when I could not get into the site in a reasonable amount of time. Same with merchants that sell at other stores, it is usually the other store for me, I don't need to pay for frustrations, life gives every one enough of them. Even reading the forums of this site does not give you a pleasant experience when it goes so slow. Your first intro to this "store" is the entrance. It takes the place of that smile most sharp stores or business give you as a first contact impression. This site is getting to be like that rude clerk we have all run into, you really sometimes dread having to go there again. The slowness happens so often that you don't equate the place with a pleasant experience. This is really a shame, there are some really nice people here, some great products and a lot of help is given in the forums.

Well for me the marketplace is very, very fast. It's the rest of the site that is slow. I wasn't sure if it was my browser or a setting I used because I also don't see the advertising banners at the top of the page either. I thought maybe I disabled them and that's what made it slower but I have no idea how to go about that in the first place. Can anyone else see the banners? I sure wish they'd at least let us know :(

aeilkema ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 3:21 PM

It's not the marketplace that is slow for me, it's the forum. It was kind of OK for a few week, but now it's worse then ever. "time to jack up the merchant fees and buy another server..;)" Don't think that it's neccesary to do at all, I think R'dosity makes more then enough money to buy a decent server and a faster forum system. I don't think they want to do it, it's been like this for ages. They rather sponsor dodgy contests with the money.....

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

When I first started here back in June The speed seemed OK but the last few weeks it has been terrible. I just timed out four times trying to log in!

rockets ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 4:02 PM

Yep, the store is the only fast thing here. The forums are the worst...oh and the front page.

It's always slow. However, somedays it's even slower. I've thought that it had something to do with the number of people posting at the time, but it varies so much that I've ruled that excuse out. I still think they should purge the site of posts more than 1 to 2 years old. They should also delete galleries of those who have been inactive on this site for 6 months or more. They should also lower both the dimensions and file size of the images allowed to be posted in the gallery. Plus they could get rid of "who's online". Doing those things would take a great deal of pressure of the servers that run these boards.

Yeah, just get rid of the galleries, especially the Poser ones.... we've seen more then enough boring vickies and other girls by now. That would free the server from lot's of pressure.

Get rid of the galleries?! I never said that! I sugggested deleting galleries of inactive members. There are galleries with images in them that were uploaded years ago and the member never seen again. It's those types of galleries I mean. Renderosity allows members to post their images. Creating a name and vanishing does not a member make... at least in my opinion. If a person leaves at one point, so should their galleries. Why should their images remain up on a site that they no longer participate in?

I wonder if anyone has noticed that on average there are more than 2000 surfers logged into this site at any one time, sometimes nearly 3000. I think that maybe the system is working very hard trying to keep up with it and possibly needs some equipment improvements to cope with the load.

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Thu, 10 November 2005 at 10:51 PM

Come on. For a commercial site, they should always over compensate. Should be able to handle large numbers on average and maximums up to, say, 10000 (or even 20000 to be safe). And you call this 'not down completely'? I couldn't even get to the MarketPlace or front page since 13:00 MST (about 8 or 9 hours ago). Ping worked, but even five minutes of spinning and no pages. Darn... my website could probably handle a hundred concurrent users and I'm a nobody on a single server (PIII yet). These guys must rake in $5000 (or ten times that) every day! Line the wallet, but dare not upgrade the service. Shameful!
