Got inspired by some sci-fi scenes (here in the forum) so I'm trying to model a kind of heavy industrial shuttle. I've only modeled one of the engines for the moment.. and I'm still waiting inspiration for the main body and the cockpit.. any advice or comment?

Of course the model looks great, but the smoke is "Big-Time" awesome.

You have some seriously good smoke going on there. NASA is sure to be jealous.

Yes linda I paint the textures with photoshop, then I import them in bryce.. I like to work this way ;-p Concerning the smoke, it's a 2D plan with a photoshop made smoke alfa channel.. By the way.. here is the cockpit! ( I'm working on the textures actually)

Here is the textured cockpit and the engines, now I got to make the landing gears, and the fuel (or else) tanks.. and of course leaving enought space for the freight... so this shuttle may be bigger than I thought... This kind of ship could find its place on a small planet mine ( I mean small because the low gravity would allow the ship to fly ).. on earth this would never take off!

Pidgy, Don't forget to arrange for some sort of mechanism of the engines to rotate for forward movement or are you planning on a different method to provide that?

rstar ( ) posted Wed, 16 November 2005 at 1:55 PM

sorry about misspelling your 'nick'! Apologies, Pidjy.

pidjy ( ) posted Wed, 16 November 2005 at 1:58 PM

Yes Rstar I got to make the rotating gears for the engine ;-p

Definitely has the look of asteroid mining equipment. How about a mini tut on your smoke technique.

Niiiicee, top model.

FYI: In real live, if this is indeed a craft that only works in space than you won't be needing rotating thrusters (the rotating mechanisme would just add weight, useless weight since it is only used for short moments), just rotate the whole craft with RCS-thrusters (small thrusters, like those in the nose and tail section of Space Shuttle) until it points in the right direction and hit the pedal until it reaches the floor.

UV dan.. I don't know if I have a "smoke technique" I just use "fractal cloud" made in photoshop and I paint the black mask with some smooth brush...

Why rotate? Couldn't you just offset those turkey feathers (nozzles) and vector the thrust as needed? It could work that way as it is now.
