Subject: Render sizes with various programs

I recently posted a question regarding a suitable 3d program to use and grow with but what i would like to ask before making my final decision is what size or render can each program be made to as it will ultimately determine the max print size available from various programs and are some limited in their capabilities for rendering large image files? Programs i would like info on are such as Bryce, Poser, Vue and other 3d programs you are experienced with. It would seem more rewarding if weeks of work was put into a single piece of work if it could be printed and framed to a large size.

Well I know that the max size Vue can render at is 4096x4096 - and a maximum of 600 dpi. Don't know about the others, though. -Zak

it might be tempting to print the products of these renderers, but they're capable of churning out so many renders at such regular intervals, that one might soon have an entire wing of one's house filled with masterpieces from floor to ceiling. as to carrara 4, I haven't confirmed this, and the manual doesn't list the maximum render size AFAIK, but the experts say it's 8092 X 8092 (actually 16kpx total, sum of width and height), which is enough to print an image sized to 27 X 27 inches at 300 dpi. as it's probably unwarranted trying to print above 300 dpi with typical inkjet printers, 4096 X 4096 is plenty big IMVHO. of course, dpi is immaterial at rendering time, as a 4096 X 4096 render at 72 dpi will occupy the same amount of RAM (64 MB) as a 4096 X 4096 render at 300 dpi.

In my corner of Renderosity, we use MojoWorld..

We use a simple formula...

print size multiplied by desired DPI....

an 8x10 @ 300 DPI would be rendered @ 2400x3000

No limit to render size because "Tile Rendering"

We simply divide up the render in to less memory intensive chunks..and then the program puts them together at the end.

An example...I rendered a 20x30 image for printing at 300 dpi

I input my image size as 6000x9000...

break it up into chunks of, let's say 300x300 pixels...

then away it goes......

I've never rendered an image larger than poster size, which is like 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet, in Max, but I've nebver heard of it having a maximum size. Any larger than 3.5 by 2,5 at 300 dpi and you're looking at a mega file size. It can become unmanageable unless you have a top of the line computer.
