Subject: How to Make a Cursor

InfoCentral ( ) posted Sat, 24 December 2005 at 2:43 PM · edited Mon, 05 August 2024 at 4:24 AM

I want to make a custom cursor with the .cur file extension. I know they have dedicated cursor making software but I thought to myself that I most likely don't need any of them and can make them in PhotoShop. So what I figure a cursor file must be is like a bitmat file with the extension changed to .cur instead of .bmt or somethink like that. Does anyone know what the parameters and file type are for making a cursor? I also see that you can make animated cursors so I assume this is an animated GIF file with its extension changed.

Microangelo or Axialis. Both will do static .cur and animated .ani cursors :-) Edit: oops forgot links http://www.microangelo.us/ http://www.axialis.com/

Here is what I have found out so far. I talked to this guy who has a website full of cursors he has created. He said that he didn't think that it could be done in PS because you had to save in the .cur and .ani format. Now this may be the case for system cursors but I don't think this is the case for web or Flash type cursors. I still can't find any information yet on cursors. You would think that there should be somewhere.

Irfanview will open .cur .ani, and .ico, and will extract all the images from the .ani, but will only save to .ico, not .cur or .ani. http://www.irfanview.com/ Another icon/cursor editor is AWicons. They have a free version. http://www.awicons.com/

It has been suggested that the .cur and .ani is actually the .ico format with the extension changed. I haven't tested this out to see if it is true yet.

I used IrfanView to open a Poser render TIF and save it as ICO, then changed the extension to CUR, and it worked. ANI appears to be similar to an animated GIF.

Here is a short paper about .ico and .cur file format.
