Subject: OT - Your opinions?

I know you guys have good taste so i thought ild ask which one of these gratings you like best. Right now im leaning towards the last one with smaller gaps and slightly irregular bars, but i could need a few second opinions. :) Its going to be a piece hanging over a futuristic door when its done. Its still a wip and im going to add more pipes, greebles and strange gadgets on it, so its only 50% done.

I agree on the irregular tubing, they're more pronounced than the first one, and more interesting than the second one. Very cool.

Thanks Rod. It does have a more worn look. :) I like the first one as well, but with the transparency map it gets a lot heavier.

As an amateur:

I find #1 rather unconvincing. A bit too obviously x/y co-ordinated. But it's a nice texture.

I quite like both #2 & #3, but if you could find a way to get that "#1 Offset Z-type" pattern to work radially on them, then that would be excellent! Hard to do though...

And I have no idea how to start to do that...

Cheers,
Diolma

(Who has to go to bed now, and won't be back til after New Year - got to go visit Mother, who is not internet connected..)

And then it's going to take me 3/4 days to catch up on the forums (fora??)

I know what you mean. I wouldnt mind an update with a couple of ghz either, especially with this scene. Ive already put in more detail on the door than i normally do on a model and its not even complete. Then it will need surroundings with even more details... :D Rochr patiently awaits the inevitable "Out of memory" message

Diolma, You need to convince the mother about the advantages with a T1 line. And Happy new year! :)

I would cast my vote for #3. The modeling looks great on all 3, but the irregularity of the piping on #3 adds a human touch; as if this is an advanced tech civilization, but things still get installed slightly crooked, or get worn-out. I look forward to trying to spot this among all the other details you put in your renders.

marcfx ( ) posted Thu, 29 December 2005 at 5:27 PM

Well, Fancy a bloke like you asking the likes of me about your modeling.......the world is full of surprises!! LOL I like the second one, not overdone with the inner slats and I feel that adding more items on it wont overpower it as it would the last. Its a shame the firsts inner metal mesh looks like its going one way and I'm sure you dont wont people's comments on something silly like that after working so hard on the other stuff to be added. ;) Its obvious thats its going to be a hit as all your other work is, so do what you do best.........just keep on modeling! ;) @ Diolma If your having trouble with your mother and no internet, get her to visit you......when she sleeps at night, you can catch up on here!! LOL

Yeah, the 3 is the best. But I'd also like to see you try to get a more irregular slots on the inside. BTW, Rudy, this reminded me... Have you ever finished the flying cities image you worked on for the Space Opera challenge? PS. I've been waiting for my new computer ten days now and I won't get it untill after New Year. I certainly hope so, because I just got Cinema 9.5 and would like to have something stronger to run it on. And it would be a nice gift from myself for my birthday on January 7. :-)

Usually the gifts we buy for ourselves are the best ones, and a new machine is a nice way to spend money. :) No, never finished up that image completely. Still lacks a few models here and there, and i couldnt find a good spot to place the cargo ship. Heres how it looks right now but the scene is a little empty. Its currently located in the wip folder along with a few hundred other scenes. :)

Btw, heres a new shot on #3. I think ill go for that one after all. Still need more detail, but i think it will be the best one to use, especially with the worn look in mind. Theres going to be a building going upwards in the center, so its not necessary with much detail inside, just so you can see something else than a flat surface. :)

Looks good. I liked 1 but that depends on the scale. Since it is huge scale then I would not go for that one. 1 works if it is about 2-3 meters in diameter.

If you go from one to three it looks like the objects evolution. Yes the alternating #3 looks like the model of choice. Evolution??? You say Sans I no, some times I dont know what the hell Im writing lol. Look forward to seeing another Rochr image;)

I never intended to make art.

Quest ( ) posted Thu, 29 December 2005 at 8:41 PM

Rochr, nice job as usual. I would also agree with your selection of #3 and I like the last pic. Was wandering if the grate system (just the bottom part) could also offer outside lighting for the building with light shining through slats as from within. Just a thought. Looking forward to the end product.

I like 3 alot. The detail in the grating on #1 is awesome too, but it kinda dissappears when you look at it at a glance. great work by the way.

Still reckon 2 is the best to use but hey, Who am I!! LOL Love the extras being added Rudy......I think you may be having more the one image to show of this modeling after its been completed........different angles to see NUMBER 2!!!

slightly irregular one defenitely! great WIP there btw, though I can see where you're commming from that it misses something... Maybe you need to really throw the composition around a few times to get some inspiration. Or you could think up a story of what all the pieces are doing in the image.

Just got back today, from visiting Mother. Many thanks for the "Diolma, You need to convince the mother about the advantages with a T1 line. And Happy new year! :)" sentiment. It's a lovely thought but, alas, Mother is over 80, suffers from Altzheimer's(SP?), has no computer at all and is not really interested in getting one. Not only that, she lives in a backwater village south of Guildford (Surrey, UK), where there's no cable connection. Ah well. She's still sweet tho' (if a little forgetful) :-) Happy new year to you too, Rochr, and my wishes to you for many more of them. Cheers, Diolma
