this months issue of game developer magazine features part 2 of a terrain development.. anyway, they use Bryce & photoshop to create some really spectacular tiled terrain. if you library has a copy, it's worth the read.

if you to, I think, gamasutra.com Game Developer is a free subscription. It's worth having. and that was a good tutorial

For those of you who don't have access to this mag, here is a product of the tutorial. (It deals with creating expansive terrain with tiles.)

from the director view.. yes, I know.. the tiles have not been fitted to each other, but thought it was better this way so you could see the edges.
