Subject: Does Poser have Animals?

Davaris ( ) posted Sun, 08 January 2006 at 6:56 AM · edited Mon, 22 July 2024 at 8:20 PM

Hi All,
I'm so new to Poser that I haven't even bought it yet. At the moment I'm still looking in the galleries and admiring the pictures produced. One of the things I've noticed, is there aren't many animals in the scenes. So I was wondering, does Poser come with animal models as well as people? Or do you have to buy them separately?

The answere is yes, poser has some animals as characters, a lot are available as free stuff and you can buy some in the marketplaces.

Poser comes with some animals. Some of them are rather ugly, while oters are ok. You can buy better animals in various places :o)

Poser 6 ships with several animals: Angelfish Cat Dog Dolphin Frog Horse Lion Raptor Rattler Wolf There are also free animals that you can find at Content Paradise, DAZ3D, and this site, among others.

Poser comes with a Dog, Cat, Horse, Dolphin, Fish, Frog, Lion, Wolf. Dinosaur and a Rattlesnake.

These are pretty low rez and not very realistic out of the box, but there are quite some freebies out there that greatly improve them, especially the horse.

There are also several third party animals out there that you have to buy extra.
As they are generally higher rez they are more realistic, but need better hardware because of their larger polycount.
And even some of the most expensive ones still have issues with anatomical correctness.

So it depends what you want to render.
If you need just a few common animals as "sidekicks", the default Poser animals would suffice.

If you want to render pictures or tell a story focussing on a certain animal, you should plan to spend some extra money for one of the third party animals.

There are also many 3rd party providers. Lyne has some really nice stuff at reasonable prices. Only available through US mail though ... no downloads.

I think you can do some pretty decent things with the Poser horse. A lot of what you get depends on your textures and lighting. That would probably apply to all of the animals included with Poser.

Noggin here at Renderosity Marketplace and at DAZ is one of several creators that make realistic Animals for Poser. (Noggins Owl rocks!)

You might want to check out DAZ Studio. It is free and comes with some limited content and you can use most of the available Poser Content with D|S.

Watch out for some of the oldest models. They do not look as good as some of the newer models.

I recommend the dinosaur models at Content Paradise. They're designed for Poser 6, but you could get them to work the same in Poser 5. They used to be free, but I think CP may be selling all the models in one package now. Look around and you may be able to find some of the models still available for free. --John
