Subject: Multi-pass rendering?

What is it? I've read about people saying the did a multi-pass render. As far as I can figure out it involves combining different renders(ambient, specular, and ???) Is there a tutorial explaining this and if not could someone explain it to me? Thanks in advance. Stew
